I was going through some old pictures when I found these. A friend of mine invented the Predator Racing Carburetor. He was asked to consult on the TV show Miami Vice. They wanted to use his carburetor in one of the Testarossa stunt cars, and they needed him to set it up. From what I have read I believe that this car was a beefed up 1972 DeTomaso Pantera chassis with salvaged Testarossa body parts, but I am not positive. You can clearly see the Predator carburetor (also called a toaster) sticking out of the top. The first pic is my friend gassing it up, and the last one is him (hidden behind his helper and Don Johnson and his son on the set. Gotta love the 80's.....

yeah that kind of rings a bell. The info I've read is it was built by Carl Roberts who also had a hand in the Daytonas (post Mcburnie) and then returned to him after the show and thats where the story generally ends.

If I am not mistaken there were two TR's. One for interior shots, the other for action shots. Last I heard Preston Henn owned the real TR.

Didn't Ferrari give them a real TR to use for the show so they wouldn't have to use replicas anymore?

I was a freshman at Florida State (fall, 1987) when I met an older freshman in my dorm. He was 23 yrs old and was one of the service writers at Sheldon Ferrari when the whole Miami Vice thing was happening.

He told me, directly, that 'the old man' had a fit when he found out the most popular show in America had a 'fake' Ferrari as the star of the show. Ferrari contacted Michael Mann and offered him the necessary cars (one for mounting cameras, the other one you actually saw) on the one condition that the replica was destroyed ON THE SHOW. The answer was YES!

Sheldon Ferrari handled the repair and maintenance of the cars during the shows production.

I guess the irony here is that even with the factory-supplied Testarossas, they STILL had a fake Ferrari on the show.

I read in my Ferrari book that the first "Ferrari" was the Daytone Spider based on a 1980 Corvette. After the success of MV Ferrari offered a real Testarossa in black and demanded that the fake car should be destroyed. The car was then painted white to increase the visibility in the night. There was also a double for the Testarossa. The De Tomaso Pantera.
1989 Enzo gave a silver Testarossa to Don Jonson. That car was auctioned in 2003 for 88560$. Somebody knows who owns the car now?

That's very common in TV & movies where "a car is the star" - they'll have one car that's only used for stills/parked, and mild driving shots - that one is called the "hero car" - they want to make sure to keep that one pristine. Then they'll have one or more other cars just like it for stunts & more aggressive driving scenes where something could potentially occur which could damage the vehicle. That way they always have at least one that's in top-notch condition, no matter what.

They blew up the Daytona with a Stinger Missile. I remember the episode. Tubbs is posing as a buyer for Stingers. He asks if the missiles are fully functional. The Seller pulls one out and blows up the Daytona. Crocket freaks.

Tubbs is as cool as a cucumber and says, "Sold."
