Maserati Granturismo (including Grantursimo S) owners, I have some curious questions regarding about your beautiful Italian car.

1.) how is the reliability and dependability of your car?

2.) how is maintenance cost of your vehicle? is it as expensive as servicing a Ferrari?

3.) is it a good everyday car?

    Thanks.

Hi SL. Last December I really intended to do a "one year with the Granturismo" post, but I never got around to it. Here are a few of the things I would have said...in order of your questions:

    1. Reliability and dependability have been great. The car has never left me stranded. It starts right up, even after sitting for two weeks. I have never had to use a battery tender. In terms of power, it is a heavy car and not the fastest exotic out there, but man can it move. The shifts are smooth and the power is pretty consistent throughout the band.

    2. Too early to tell on maintenance costs. I have put around 5600 miles on mine, and have not tracked the car, so I have not needed to replace the tires yet. Otherwise, the warranty covers virtually everything else. Keep in mind the 4.2 of the Granturismo is a version of the Ferrari V8 currently used in the F430. Gone are the days when the engine had to come out for majors. I have a few more years to go before I am paying out of pocket for maintenance. That being said, I have only had one service issue with the car in over a year. At some point, I noticed a small power steering fluid leak. My dealer very quickly replaced the power steering rack under warranty and solved the problem.

    3. It makes a great daily driver. Technically, I don't really use it in the complete sense of a "daily driver" as I switch between the GT and another car, usually driving the GT for at least a week at a time before giving her some rest. However, I could easily drive it every day, every week. The seats are very comfortable. The rear seats are human sized. I can take business associates out without even thinking twice. On weekends, the kids fit perfectly. The trunk space is great. But...now I am making it sound boring. The real thrill is getting on the throttle, hearing that exhaust note, and tearing down the road.

Hope this helps. If you have any specific questions, let me know!

The Palerider, thanks for your time in answering my questions and based from what you said, it really is a wonderful car. Also, one more thing I forgot to ask, you mentioned that you "can take business associates out without even thinking twice" with this car. Is it safe to say that it is easy to go in and out from the back seat?

Absolutely. The rear access is assisted by power front seats. Once you pull the "lever" on the front seat, it moves forward automatically to allow easier entry to the rear. When the seat back is returned to the upright position, the entire seat slides back into position.

    Definitely.

I've had seat time in the GT both as a driver and in the back seat. The dealer pushed the car pretty hard while I was in the back seat and I was still comfortable.

BUYER BEWARE WHEN YOU ARE BUYING OR SERVICING A MASERATI!!! We have owned every luxury car available on the market - Porsche, BMW M5, Range Rover, Mercedes, etc. We were always leery of buying a Maserati because of the bad reputation it had with regard to repairs and problems. Due to our fabulous experience with service on all of our previous cars, we foolishly believed that we could have the beauty of a Maserati combined with the efficiency and customer service that we had come to expect and take for granted from our other dealerships. WE REGRET EVER BUYING THIS CAR!!! First of all, it breaks down all the time! Not even big things, but little annoying things as well. It gets to the point that you don't even want to take it in to get serviced until you have at least 3 things break down or else you would be there all the time. Which gets me to the point of the customer service - shocking! You basically are at the mercy of incompetent mechanics who can never seem to resolve or replicate the problem, and while they keep the car for days of "observation" you are left with one of their rental cars which is usually a Ford Escape of something like that. At least that has been our experience with the ever so incompetent MASERATI OF ATLANA - seriously, they need to be shut down! So basically at the end of day you are left with a car that is always breaking down, you are given a dumpy old rental Ford to drive around while your car is getting "serviced" (I question whether they even look under the hood), and then some rude mechanic tells you that they cannot fix the car or that that is just part of the Italian "charm" of the vehicle not to work properly! Do yourself a favor - buy a 911 with all the bells and whistles - it won't break down on you nearly as much and you will get better service than you would at MASERATI OF ATLANTA!!!!!

I have a 2005 GranSport and it has been perfectly reliable. I've driven the heck out of it as daily driver, track car, and on rallies. The uniqueness, performance, and reliability can't be beat. Sure, you can be like 9 of 10 other cars on the road.

Thanks for your participation on FerrariChat.com, we'll be seeing you around to have other valuable conversations?

Am sorry to hear your frustrations at the same time your experience on the dealer considering the fact that they should be treating you better compared to MB's, Porsche, BMW etc etc. Though I think it is a case to case basis as well. Maybe the dealer where you are servicing your car doesn't know anything at all, worse, pretending they know how to fix it but apparently are clueless on how to solve the problem.

I've encountered some problems like that but maybe not as bad as yours. With my personal experience (not with Maserati because I don't own one yet), sometimes a small problem becomes big simply because the mechanic nor the dealer knows how to fix it. Also, sometimes it comes down to pride. I mean, if the dealer can't fix it, better call Maserati USA and get some help in order to resolve the problem. With the way things are going nowadays, customer satisfaction is the name of the game.

....you sound like a shill for Porsche of Atlanta. I'm calling HUGE Bullsh^t on this one! I seriously doubt that you own a Maserati. Yea, you've got to prove you own one, because I doubt you do.

I wouldn't be so sure on that. I have had a 4.2 ltr Granturismo that was so bad that they basically took it back and gave me my money back and did a discounted deal on a 4.7 ltr Granturismo S to replace it.

So many problems I can't be bothered typing war and peace; but if anyone is interested enough, go through these threads (Scroll through looking for posts under my user name) :

I love the 4.7 ltr Granturismo S; but I never warmed to the 4.2 ltr. I drive the car every day and managed 8500 km's on my 4.2 ltr and so far 6000 km's on my 4.7 ltr. They make great everyday cars if you can get past the faults and the crappy dealer service.

Latest problem is a cracked input button on the cars computer. It's not listed as a separately available part, so when it's out of warranty the theory would be buy a new GPS/STEREO/TELEPHONE Computer for a $2 plastic button.
The dealer got Maserati to supply one with persistence; but how persistent would they be if YOU had to pay for it out of warranty?

Great cars; but not entirely sure if they are worth the trouble.

I have owned 3 Maserati's a 03 coupe, and Qport, and now a Grand Turismo, none of them spent much time at the dealer and were better than any of the Merc, BMW's or Land Rovers I have owned. As some of you know I have owned 127 cars in the last 10 years, the Masers get up into the top 10 for service. Buy one, have fun.

I guess we can only comment on our own experiences. Without sitting down and counting I have owned maybe 40 cars in something like 15 years. Covers Mercs, BMW's, Porsches, Ferraris and other makes. I wish the Maseratis were reliable as I love my 4.7 ltr despite all the problems. Unfortunately the reliability isn't there, the build quality is poor (have a close look at your paint as an example) and the dealer makes all the right noises; but really doesn't care. In my experience, it sadly isn't good enough. Buy one by all means; but go in with your eyes open.

Your experience is well documented, but I have not seen other consistent bad reports like yours of the GranTurismo. You got one of the first cars out of production right? They also took the car back and made it right?

Unfortunately, you seem to be very unlucky and many other owners have posted otherwise. A friend of mine with a QP uses his everyday, in our harsh winters and potholed city and much preferred it to the 750il he had before. A bad experience can happen to anyone with any brand. Maybe you should switch.

Correct and if the story stopped there I most certainly wouldn't have mentioned it here at all. I now have an "S" which I really love; but the problems continue. I have unfortunately had issues with the same dealer on my F50 which I haven't documented here. It takes an awful lot to put me over the edge, guess I am there.

I have a mate who has done 100,000 km's in his QP with no problems. I have another mate who has had 2 of them and had minor issues. Another mate with issues on his QP.

We pay silly money for these things here- my "S" would run to nearly $300k US. I believe we should be getting better than we are for that sort of money. I have a friend whose mother drives a $15k US mass market car. Had some brake problems, was overcharged by the dealer. Husband complained and the managing director of the dealer rang him personally and arranged for the entire service to be free of charge.

Pay $300k US for a Maserati and get vastly inferior service to what you would receive in mass market dealership. Doesn't seem right to me.
