I was driving by Discount Tire in my 575, thought maybe I should get my Nys inspection done. Guy must have seen me coming in. Waited on line, and when I got to him he asked what car I have. I said 2002 Ferrari. He promptly responded “we don’t take care of that kind here” I just left, assumed it had to do with insurance coverage, but had to refrain from joking that it wasn’t the 1960s anymore
Be glad they did. Far too many shops take in cars they have no business working on. Its great when someone actually turns down a job that shouldn't be in the shop for a great many reasons.
Let me just say that in Virginia, when a state safety inspection shop pulls a wheel to measure for minimum brake pad thickness, they are responsible for reinstalling the wheel according to the manufacturer's cited torque specs. I would imagine that 575 wheel torque specs might not be readily available just anywhere. Hence, your experience.
In NY, it’s much more simple. Just plugging in the obd, checking headlights, ect. Never takes more than 15min, and never had to have a wheel taken off
Thankfully the number of states still doing safety inspections is on the decline and not very many states are still doing them. Its only the auto repair and auto dealer lobby keeping them alive. There is zero evidence it improves highway safety and a great deal of evidence they drive business to the shops.
No data but general impression from memory is that there were more mechanically "unsafe" cars on the road 40-50 years ago compared to today. Today, State mandated car inspection is a scam.
This happens rightly because they know they have idiot staff. Margins are thin. If they scratch your wheel and you batch they will demonstrate tire and repair and remount tire. Then color may not match and they end up repaint all 4 wheels. If 1 wheel is lost because more idiots out of owner's control...you see where this goes. Profits go away fast. Even if they work slower and precisely to not cause damage they could have sold/mounted 2 sets of bmw tires in that period of time. They can always make a profit on a subaru or bmw. Exotic cars have type A owner's. Don't be cheap go to a specialty smaller tire shop who can five you the service you demand.
Pretty sure you were just dick swinging..you had no reason to do such a thing. This is why Ferrari owners have such a bad name.
Whoa there. Where else should I go to get a NYS inspection? None of the exotic Indy’s here offer it and Ive never heard of someone driving to the Ferrari dealer just to do this. People here just go to the big box stores like mavis and pep boys or the small garage station shops. In NY it’s not a complicated affair, just plugging in an obd and putting a new sticker in the windshield. Never had anyone object to doing an inspection in the past. No tools involved.
I agree yearly inspections are a waste of money and time for a modern car. Every three or five years might be more appropriate for cars younger than 10 years or so. The only part of the inspection that makes any sense is the exhaust emissions to eliminate smog(remember that? I haven’t seen or heard of it in perhaps 2 decades) Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Nothing to do with cost. NYS inspections are fixed at $27, minimal work involved but still takes time. It’s a loss leader with shops banking on the business it brings in. They know I’m not going to service my ferrari there so they have no incentive to inspect it. That’s why I’m not really annoyed, I just thought the way he said it was funny. Normally I bring my cars to the same small repair shop by my house. I don’t service my Ferraris there either but he’s been good about it.
As an aside, in NY, they are required by law to do the inspection if you ask them to and they have the appropriate equipment to do so. Your car has an OBD II port, which means they have the appropriate equipment to do most of the inspection without needing anything more than a reader. If they can't do it at the time your show up, they are required to give you an appointment at a reasonable time to come back and have it done. As to dinging a wheel? Well, they risk that with every car they inspect, and the cost to repair a Mercedes wheel is no higher than the cost to repair a Ferrari wheel. The difference is that Discount Tire knew there wasn't any money in it for them beyond the inspection fee, so they passed. Can't say I blame them, and truth be told maybe you dodged a bullet, but, they can't really say no. D
^^^^ THIS FOR SURE ^^^^ I know someone who took their 996 Turbo to a quick-change oil place. He tried to show them the oil drain points with the dry sump just to be sure, but they said they knew what they were doing. They ended up draining the transmission oil (thinking it was the engine oil) and overfilling the oil tank. This mistake was not realized until after driving off with overfilled engine oil and empty transmission. I don't remember all the details, but it was about as bad as you can imagine. Somebody saying they shouldn't do the work is a blessing.
I took some Corvette wheels to have the tires dismounted...it wasn't until I got home that I found one of my $450 tires were completely torn where the bead is so it could never be remounted. So as a general rule of thumb... NEVER TAKE A HIGH END CAR TO A PLACE WITH "DISCOUNT" IN THE NAME.
I remember when I got my first new Ferrari several years ago , I got a flat tire so ordered a new tire from tire rack . However no one around here at the time would do the tire change. They said it just was not worth the risk I ended up sending it to the dealer about 200 miles away...
I don't know if I agree with you on this one Brian. We drive down to Florida (where there is no inspection) every year and no where else do I ever see so many abandoned cars off the highway. It seems anyone can drive any mechanically, lighting and tire deficient vehicle. I have no evidence that it is worse, but I trust my eyes. Now on the other hand, Massachusetts is absolutely anal about inspections. A few years ago they required all inspection stations to install several cameras in the inspection bay as well as a hand held camera to take a photo of the car's dash while the car is running. The State is able to monitor any inspection remotely, and the inspections are very thorough, down to your windshield washer has to work. My guy used to inspect my Ferraris without a front plate, now I have to attach it because he has to take a photo of it on the car. I think the cumbersome process encourages people to register their car out of state if they can.
Not my opinion. Has been studied to death by a variety of highway safety and insurance groups. Pretty well understood its still law as a result of auto industry lobbyists. Lots of factors involved. Some of the safest states have no inspection.
Alabama has never had inspections. I cannot imagine having to go thru those motions and pretend it helps.
