Any experiences with the use of Redline LightWeight ShockProof on 360/430 transaxles? Starting to get some grinding (gated car) upshifting from 2nd to 3rd on Redline 75w90NS + 2 bottles of friction modifier (8oz for diff chatter). Have also tried an alternative 75w90 GL5 oil will pre-mixed modifiers which resulted in worst grinding. Few folk have recommended trying the Redline LightWeight ShockProof which apparently can resolve synchro related gremlins however concerned about manufacture's recommendation "can be used with pumps and coolers when equipped with an inline screen rather than a fine filter": https://www.redlineoil.com/lightweight-shockproof Understand the 360s have a "filter" rather than a "screen", not sure how fine these filters are to get clogged with solid particles suspended in this product. Anyone inspected their 360/430 gearbox screens after using this oil? I'm also getting a bit of stripping of the zinc coating on the gearbox oil dipstick, unsure if this indicates the redline 75w90NS GL5 oils I've been using longer term might be attacking synchro yellow metals? I've read all the posts debating GL5 vs GL4 oils however I'm reluctant to go down the GL4 path with the hypoid gears in the differential. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Have you tried the NS without any modifiers and if it chatters ..add an oz at a time to find a delicate balance Sent from my moto g power using Tapatalk
I use the redline with no issues. I do put a good glug of Lucas oil modifier in and never hear any chatter.
Hi bob224, it is interesting that you used two 8oz bottles of friction modifier. I am have a similar issue at RPMS above 3k I am getting grinding shifting into 3rd gear. We are testing just using non-slip to maybe help the synchros spin up faster. We have not added any friction modifier yet. I am not getting any chatter nor did the new oil seem to help much. I also attached two photos of what the filter/mesh looked like before and after cleaning. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I believe most, if not all GL4 and GL5 gear oil is now "yellow metal safe". I like redline products and use 75-90NS in my 360 gated 6 speed. I also used it in my 348 years ago, with good results. Seemed to reduce the whine. No synchro problems in either car, so can't comment on that. Several folks that know more than me about trans-axles have mentioned that the use of gear oil with particulate friction additives are not suited for any trans-axle with a filter or screen. It makes sense, and therefore I know of no one that has used the shock proof product long term in their late model Ferrari diff. Just my 2 cents.
I do not recall anyone here advising a GL4 in a 360. It would be a very bad idea. 360 has a small and high stress hypoid ring and pinion. GL4 does not contain the required additives for hypoid gears. GL4 would probably kill the ring and pinion. That would be very expensive. Shock proof gear oils were designed for racing transmissions with no syncros. Its not a good choice in a 360. I have replaced many worn out syncros in 360s. Its not unusual and I don't believe any oil is going to be a real fix. Zinc is not considered a yellow metal. Zinc is fragile and the water moisture from condensation in the gear oil attacks the dipstick no matter what oil is used.
Through my recent multiple flushes, I tried this right next to the ravenol vsg. I noticed no difference between the two. I’ll be sticking with ravenol.
I have used that. I have nothing against it. It works fine but in my opinion its no better that easier to get, less expensive products.
Thoughts on SoftwareDrone using it in his 360 for 15 years and 70,000 miles? Also, quite a few shops use it in 360s without a problem. On paper it does appear to be bad, but in real world use, it seems to be great stuff even on our cars. I value your opinion, so really asking.
Your information is wrong. I have never used the product and I was the one who serviced his car until I moved to Texas.
