How is the rear view mirror secured into the headliner & the windshield on the 458 Italia? There are no screws or attachment points. Today was about to take a ride and to my surprise the rearview mirror was dandling by it's electrical wires. Could not secure it by pushing back into the headliner. Did notice what appeared to be about 2mm thick possible 2 sided tape attached to the body of the inside of the mirror however there was no attachment to the windshield as backing was not removed from the factory installation. Did not know if this material was to secure or just to protect the windshield from friction. Appreciate any info to secure my mirror & not take the car in for service.

Thanks Dave but there is some type of greyish blue plastic block (1/2 "X 1/2 "x 2mm thick) adhered to the electronics in the body of the mirror & on further inspection it appears to have been adhered to the windshield for support of the body of the mirror to the windshield. Looks like when adhered to the windshield some sort of clear contact glue remains on the plastic block I spoke of. Gives support to mirror body. What type glue Or do you buy the plastic piece with the glue?

Thanks for the reply. No the separation was from the window. The metal mount with the small plastic mounting block separated from the glass.

Hi Dave . That is how it looks, however in the center of the T section there is a Metal Button that is secured in that section somehow. This so called metal button is attached to the whole housing then to the windshield. The section facing out is attached to the window. That block which would be the attachment side that attaches is coated with some type of resin/ plastic? ( appears to have a 2mm greyish material on the surface area that would face the windshield attachment surface). All recin that I researched say the button must be metal. First do you know how to remove the metal button from it's housing as it's still attached to the housing you displayed in the picture you sent me. Then what mirror attachment recin does Ferrari use, then how to reattach the metal so called button to the plastic housing. Thanks again Dave

I'm sorry, Gary but we never see the windshield side as these come to us removed as posted above.

Thanks Dave for the support. Don't know if I'll tackle this myself as I consistently am I guy who ends up with to few parts or too many when I put stuff back together. Certainly don't want to mess up an expensive windshield in any way. Just got my notice that it's time to fix the passenger air bag issue. Have some minor issues with passenger air vent noise at speed over 60mph so I may as well pack it up, put it on Ferrari Truck for a service call. Thanks again. JGF

Gary the metal mount normally stays attached to the windshield, I just slide the mirror down to unhook it. Since your metal mount is still attached to the mirror all you have to do is slide the mount down or up from the mirror (it might be a little tight but it will slide off), afterwards you can reglue it to the windshield with rear view mirror glue from a auto parts store, and then remount the mirror.

Thanks for the reply. I successfully removed the metal button from the housing. What is the trick to unhooking the 2 electrical connections. The larger one one wrapped in the foam( insulation) has what looks like a trigger & it snapes forward, however after pulling it's block forward it doesn't release the male & female parts. The smaller one looks like a pull apart but don't like that idea not knowing what I could be breaking. Gary

I too am learning how to disconnect the housing from the mount. If its attached to the vehicle, to go up or down to detach from the glass?

Hey guys, I'm thinking of replacing the rear view mirror with this: https://www.amazon.com/AUTO-VOX-Backup-Camera-9-35Stream-Screen/dp/B08FT4VC37.

My 458 car doesn't have a backup camera so this looks like a good solution. It also doubles as a dash cam, which is cool.

So the question is, will this mirror fit? And if so, how exactly do I go about removing the stock mirror? Do I grab the stem of the mirror and push it forward (toward the front of the car)? I did a small try and it seems to be very tight on there. I don't want to break anything.

An alternative is to take this to a local car stereo/sound installer. I'm in South San Jose. Any good recommendations?

    Thanks,
    Alvaro

If it is the type that "snaps" on, be VERY careful. When pushing on the windshield from the inside, it is VERY easy to crack the windshield! It's strength is from the outside pushing in (convex). From the inside pushing out (concave), it is very weak. If you break the windshield on this car, it is a $7,000 job (but covered under insurance). I spoke to the Ferrari mechanic that does windshields, and he said that it was a pain to snap the mirror on, and he is always afraid because he has broken windshields in the past, while trying to snap them on!

Spot on the metal piece is normally part of the windscreen and comes with it when you got a new screen

Obviously you don’t want to be purchasing a new screen if only that piece as come away from the screen

So as said it just needs re-glueing/bonding back onto the windscreen however from experience the normal windscreen glues from the auto shops won’t cut it

You need the proper stuff that the windscreen fitters use

Just find a local windscreen replacement guy get him to bond the piece back on and refit the mirror back to for you shouldn’t charge too much as well

    All the best

Thanks. So would you know how to properly and carefully remove the mirror so that I can replace it with a different one? Mine's the one with the homelink buttons and auto-dimming.

I am also thinking about to do this as mine does not come with rear camera. I just bought this wireless camera but I do think i will keep it as it is lagging quite a lot (It could take from 10 -30 seconds to open it) https://www.amazon.com/Type-Bt56617-6-License-Backup-Camera/dp/B07M9ZLVWZ/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=type+s+back-up+camera&qid=1650818549&sprefix=type+s+%2Caps%2C140&sr=8-4

What about the homellink function if you are going to replace the mirror with Auto-VOX? I have been talking with Hai at http://www.thecarstereocompany.com/contact.html about the running a hardwire rear camera. He is in Sunnyvale I am in Eastbay may be we can meet and drive one day.

    Cheers!

Oh cool. I'm not using the Homelink function since it doesn't work with my current (more modern, I guess) garage door unless I buy an adapter for it. So I just use a fob which I clip to the visor. So I don't mind doing away with the mirror in exchange for a rear camera with a looped recording feature.

Yeah, those fancy wirelesscameras are laggy and a pain to get working with the phone. That's why I'm looking for a wired solution such use AutoVox. It seems like the best one of the bunch. If you get it installed, please PM me so that I can do the same thing. I'm normally handy with car electronics but for this I'd rather pay someone who's experienced rather than risk messing up car.

    Thanks!
