I took my 2011 458 in for annual maintenance to a local dealer recently. The routine inspection found one of the rear struts leaking badly. Apparently the part needs to come from Italy and is absurdly expensive. The car had a mild and uneventful winter with very little use so I am flummoxed about how this could happen. Any similar experiences to learn from?

Seals can go bad, especially when they sit unexercised for long periods of time.

Out of curiosity, how much did the dealer say the strut was installed?

I had the same issue. Left front strut leaking clear fluid. $6500. Dealer would not repair…only replace the strut. Due to a bad seal. CPO does not cover it due to it being a fluid leak.

My 458 is in perfect condition. The seals go bad with time.

Ah ok, well that’s why- there is no CPO for them— the CPO factory extension which would cover it is only if it’s still in factory warranty when purchased… (adds 2 years beyond end of the factory warranty) You have the POWER 15, POWER or what they call Ferrari approved type warranty.

Negative. But I have watched every 458 video on Youtube, so I recalled this one and thought it was appropriate.

The iron particles that interact with the magnetic fields controlling shock characteristics are abrasive and wear out the seals. The technology also provides the car with amazingly supple ride with great handling.
A number of places rebuild them with newer, supposedly less abrasive fluid and stronger seals.

Our 458s are aging. The cost of replacement vs refurbishment are the reality owners will face. Fuel pump failure and leaking seals are also expensive, This is a common wear and tear item for F cars. The magneride shocks are generally very durable. We will have to see if the other 3 will fail in the near future. A 2011 has 12 years under its belt. My car although a bit younger, has tons of miles and I do worry and inspect the rubber boots, seals and bushings. If I choose to keep the car, I guess I have to expect many of these types of repairs.

Some interesting information about the improvement of the magnetic fluid particles to enhance the life of the seals. This is nice for those who own younger F cars since all of the models use these shocks.

Given the abrasive character of the material in the shocks, I wonder whether using the bumpy road button actually accelerates the degradation of the seal. I use it all the time because of the crappy roads around me and thought I was protecting the suspension by doing so. Maybe it is the opposite…

All the more reason to drive and enjoy your 458s. Time and ride will take its toll, regardless.

I would think there would be decent aftermarket kits for shocks, pumps, etc. emerging as there are so many of these aging cars.

FYI there are four fuel pumps in the 458(!), and the injectors cannot be replaced individually.

I say, drive them hard, what the heck.

Leaking badly is time for replacement, mine is a '14 and they've been seeping, which my manager says is normal considering the age. FYI, I was told this w/ 6k on the clock and now have 7,700, you?

Happened last month on my 2011 Italia as well. Par for the course at this point, unfortunately.

If madeno racing rebuild is EU3550 versus new OEM ferrari shock for $2300 on line, why would a person choose rebuild?

i think their charge is for a “set”, as stated on their website…..I wrote them to check if by a “set”, they mean the 4 ea struts of the car…..

When I initially looked at the website I didn’t read that the 3500EU price was for the set-thanks for the clarification.
