Came back from a nice Sunday afternoon drive. When I stopped the engine, I noticed that the radiator fan was running, this is not unusual. Now 30 mins later, the fan is still running. This is unusual (I think).

I guess I could disconnect the battery using the main cutoff switch in the trunk. Any other suggestions?

My car is an 05 f430.

If the battery drains completely, can I recharge it using the battery tender?

    Thanks in advance.

Interesting mate. I wonder if you have a sticking relay for those fans?

Wifeys car (not a Ferrari) did that once. Fan usually runs for a few minutes on shutdown, but an hr later we went out again and I walked outside and heard the fan still running.:eek:

I popped the hood and pulled the relay. The fan stopped, I re-inserted the relay and the fan didnt come on.

We went for a drive that day and it has not played up since then. So maybe you have a sticking relay or some crap on the terminals.

Perhaps find the relay, pull it out and re-insert and see what happens mate. :):)

Also, I have seen cars overheat and their fans run for a little bit longer after shutdown. Your car didnt hotter than normal did it?

Also...............I have seen cars that have had ECU failures which throws the fans on also. But I dont think that is the problem here. ;);)

The car was not unusually hot when I got back, I didnt drive it at all hard.

I dont think that it was an ECU failure, there were no warning lights showing, my guess is also a sticking relay. Does anyone know where the radiator fan relay is located? I am referring to the front driver's side radiator.

    Cool man. :):)

Yeah, I highly doubt its an ECU failure. :D:D

Ive seen various makes and models of cars over the years with ECU failures that leave the fans on, on shutdown.

Its easy to check a suspected ECU failure, you just try and re-start the car. It wont restart if it has an ECU failure. :D:D

Again, I dont think this is your issue here. I just threw that out there. ;);)

Is the fan still on?? Approx 1.5+ hrs since shutdown?:eek:

Nope the fan is not on. But then again, that is what happens when one disconnects the master battery switch. :) I didnt want to take a chance on draining the battery.

Will check into the problem again tomorrow morning.

BTW, I found the location on the fan relays in the manual. They are located in the luggage compartment fuse box (p106 of the Owner's Manual). They are very easy to get at.

    Thanks Pap!

It's quite weird that the fans can run without the ignition key inserted. On the F430, they usually can't run without the key inserted and contact II made.

Was is the LHS or RHS fan (or both) ?

It was the LHS (driver's side) fan.

I did a quick check this morning, I put back the battery master switch. The car did some type of diagnostic check, I head two beeps. The fan did not run. I didnt have the time to do a more thorough check, in other words I didnt try to start the car.

I have also sent an email to the service manager at Ferrari of Quebec. I have not heard back from him yet.

    I shall keep everyone posted.

I took the car out for a quick drive, about 20 mins. I came home, shut her down, no fan!
I am thinking that the problem was a stuck relay. I will get another relay to have as backup. I suspect that the issue will come back.

BTW, since I have reconnected the battery master switch, my radio has been acting a bit funny. I have seen random garbage characters on the display, and on one occasion the radio was working (i.e. music was playing) but the display was blank. Anybody else experience similar probs?

The thing to try and resolve is whether the relay is stuck or actually or has 12VDC across the coil.
Now you know where the realy is, give it a tap if it does it again. As Pap said relays can "stick up" either due to aramture plate of relay mechanism binding or contact weld. A tap will usuall fix this. Then replace relay.
If the relay is being energised with 12V, then it is only doing what it is being told and problem is not relay.
Hope this makes sense...I work with relays and electronics all day so kept it simple.

Does your radio have a removable front panel? If so I'd recommend removing it, cleaning the connectors on both radio and panel and try reinserting.

    Good luck.

So how do I say this...you may have kept it simple, but what you don't know is that you are conversing with a car electronics simpleton. If it happens again, I will replace the relay. If the replacement relay fails, I will get the dealership to look at it.
