you'll need a reverse thread pipe wrench;-). dumb answer... it's a pretty easy replacement. no hidden mysteries. drain coolant, unplug wires, take out the old put in the new. you could use teflon tape or pipe dope sealant on the threads but i'm not sure if it's needed.

call me crazy, i've found that if done fast enough little coolant is lost. since it sits at the bottom of the rad and the system should be air free, a vacuum will hold most of the coolant in. quickly remove the old one, plug hole with thumb and then install new one. have a bucket readyy to catch an spill and re-fill the system. still need to bleed it a bit, but it faar less work than a complete flush.

    just my pennies worth ;)

easy to do did it and stadt 2 weeks ago,you can move pass side fan out of way has 4 10mm. nuts take them off than move fan to d/s ,loosen fan switch to finger tight, get new fan switch in fast hand remove old one ,fast, install new one, fast, minimal loss of coolant, dont forget to bleed air out of system bleeder at top pass side of radiator is a thumb screw get it hot first and do it a few times than again a few days later same with bleeder on stadt housing 10mm
bolt do not overtighten it is an alum housing with a copper crush washer under the bolt you might as well do stadt also cant hurt gives you peice of mind.

I replaced mine on my 85 QV. The part is the same for a 1978 VW Rabbit ($12.50)
Not sure about a 328, but probably is the same.

I know from my years of H2O VW hot-rodding that the VW fan switches are supposed to be more like 190F, but that getting switches at lower temps is easy. I got a 175F version for my Scirocco for some nominal amount from New Dimensions a few years ago. Also nothing wrong with dropping it in a pan of water on the stove with the wife's candy thermometer and a voltmeter to see when/if it really comes on.

    Did that too.

I got the 175 Deg F, and it works like a charm. The problem with my car turned out to be the thermostat. So I still have the original T-sensor. It can be yours for ten gazillion dollars.
The VW part is made in Germany and somehow I trust Germans more than Italians on those electrical components.

I too trust the Germans more (and I'm Italian)...any sources you want to name/list, with part numbers?...
I'm in Colorado and we're snowed in with more to come!...doubt very much if I can find it here. Tried finding 3 snow blowers yesterday (for work)..none in Colorado... Had to order from Wisconsin, heck even the grocery store shelves are getting bare

oh come on we own ferraris not v w i hope we can afford to buy the factory parts to insure no problems i to was slightly shocked at the 135.00 dollar stadt but instead of hunting down the illusive v w one i opted to save time and aggrevation due to the fact that i dont like to play guessing games with the 328 that may cause damage to my engine, also i had the correct one at my shop in 3 days and in the car that night no problems, call ricambi and be done with it,just some advice.

The "Ferrari part" it is NOT really made by Ferrari. Ferrari is not into the temperature sensors busines, the part is outsorced to somebody in Italy.
Now the VW part is Bosch, I think. And between the two; the German part can insure the performance of your car better that the Italian part.
For me it was a 30 minutes drive round trip to get the part, so it was a no brainer.

God forbid you find out that your fuel hoses are not made by Ferrari.

we all know i hope that ferrari does not make alot of the seviceable parts but they do spec them out ,what i think is that it may not be good to move the spec parameters around over a few dollars i would rather have the ferrari advised part with the proper specs for my car like i said the v w switch came on above 200 , not for me, the proper parts wok perfectly no problem, whats a couple of bucks, if you know its right and there is no guess work involed ? minimal ,

If it came above 200 is because he bought one that turn on at 200. Just get the one that is calibrated for the temperature you want.

About Ferrari specs, I really do not think that there are any different than any other manufacturers for these kind of devices. Probably pretty important for engine components. But by past reputation, the electrical equipment was not all that hight quality.

BTW Probably the quality of a part manufatured in the last 5 years is more durable than one made in the early 80's

    It is a Wahler 6010.75D
    75 = 75 Deg C = 167 Deg F

I use this page http://www.eurospares.co.uk/ to look for the part numbers, the I go to http://www.ricambiamerica.com/ or http://www.allferrariparts.com/ to get them.

hey i can give you some more usefull tips , without to much scrutiy hopefully.when you redo your hoses go to a marine store ( boat us or west marine ) the marine hose is much better the fuel hose you would need for the tank crossover is reenforced with spiral steel wire and nice and thick you can get all hose there , in any size, this hose is alot stronger than automotive grade due to uscg regs nice stuff

Thanks but it was done about a month ago. There were only a couple of hoses that are model specific. To tell you the truth, I have no idea where the mechanic got them. They are specialized in Porche and Ferrari, but they are sorrounded by marine equpment shops, so I don't know what they got.
