Reading the latest issue of Forza magazine, saw an ad for a top radar detector/laser device.

I never owned a radar detector and never had a speeding ticket. But with local governments needing more and more money, who knows if they can set up stupid unfair traps…

Do you use radar detectors, do you recommend owning one? Is it really legal to use also use a laser to scramble a radar?

The ad was about the Uniden R9: do you own one, what’s your review?

IMHO, this guy does the best job at reviewing radar detectors and other devices.

I used to use Valentine, but now I just use WAZE.

BTW, thanks for posting all those model specific videos!

Perfect, thanks. I’m going to visit the website and learn more about radar detectors and which one to buy.

Thank you very much! I enjoy watching videos about all types of cars and brands. I thought Fchat members might be interested but did not know that the various threads would become so popular (especially German + British + Italian brands other than Ferrari).

    ;) enjoy them!

Plenty to read on the website you mentioned. I saw that the Uniden R9 mentioned in my original post is the best performing device according to the website. Will read more and then make a decision.

I also need to read more about the laser option (it’s really legal to scramble a radar?)

My faorite is the Escort Redline.

What is illegal is jamming radar. Jamming laser is still legal, last I heard.

I’ll check the device you mentioned. However a device in FL cannot have a laser. After checking the law in Florida, radars are allowed (detecting police radars) but not laser (interfering with a police equipment), therefore if we buy a radar detector, it would certainly not have a laser option (illegal in FL).

Which leads me to the following question: I read radar detectors (no laser) are not good against police lasers (contrary to regular police radars), is it true? Because if it is, why bother spending hundreds of dollars to buy a device that is almost worthless against a laser gun used by the Police?

Law enforcement in FL don’t give any trouble over radar detectors — and they wouldn’t even know if it has a laser jammer feature… unless it actually jammed their laser…. However, most police use Ka band radar and that’s what it’ll pick up early enough to save you some tickets.

My three Redlines DETECT police laser just as they detect police Ka/K/X radar, but they don't JAM laser.

A device that also detects police laser (not just a regular police radar) sounds great. Will also do some research about Redline.

Ye most do,.. the problem with laser is its way too fast and you’re already caught by the time the detector signals… that’s why jammers were invented.

Thank you for the explanation. So, back to my earlier post: a radar/laser detector would work well if the Police is using a regular radar, but not if they use a laser (too late to catch it). Jammers are illegal in Florida. So, buying a device may equal a significant number of times when a laser radar is detected too late (meaning the radar detector serves no purpose). Going to do some research on how prevalent Police laser radars are in South Florida/Florida compared to regular Police radar (if such information is available).

Ya, I got some cop friends too and will ask them…. Wonder if they try laser and it gets ‘jammed’, does that mean they immediately pull that car over for having jammers? Not sure.

Picked up a Uniden R4 after a couple days of research...seemed like the most reasonably priced without losing much vs some of the newer models from Escort, Valentine, and Uniden. Had it hardwired so I don't have to use the cig lighter & looks pretty clean sitting in the middle of the windshield below the mirror. Mostly bought for piece of mind when cruising around town since I daily my Cali T and find myself getting on it from time to time :)

Were you able to ask your friends? Curious about the answers if they do not mind telling you (including how prevalent Police laser radars are in South Florida/Florida compared to regular Police radar).

Thank you for the information. I noticed your friend did not know if a laser jammer was legal or not (”need to ask the traffic unit”). I had lunch today with an acquaintance who is an attorney and she said that laser jammers interfere with law enforcement’s devices and are illegal in the State of Florida (severe penalties).

So, if most police officers use laser (confirmed by your friend), then buying a radar detector has no value as they cannot warn in advance about a police laser: when the warning arrives, the police laser has already did its job. Only a jammer can stop a police laser but it’s illegal in FL based on the attorney.
Therefore, everyone in FL who already bought a device with a laser jammer should be very careful.
