The FIA and Formula 1 are always trying to increase competition. Has anyone suggested determining race starting position by drawing lots, instead of the traditional qualification process? If the lots were truly random, then every driver would get to start from every position over the course of a season (20 drivers and 20 races). Having watched several of the better drivers start from dead last because of the rules, there is quite a struggle for even the best to get back to the front where they presumably belong.

Random would be daft....especially considering that qualifying these days is often the most exciting part of the weekend (apart from the ''battle'' for 1st and 2nd, which is non-existent really).

It was suggested to try reverse grid races for this year, but Mercedes blocked it.

Reverse grids are so GP2. F1 is better than that.

FIA doesn't care about competition in F1. Todt has said many times it's up to the other teams to catch up even tho the FIA has restricted their ability to catch up.

    GP2 doesn't exist, that's exactly what F1 needs a reset :p

didn't the BTCC use reverse starting position for the top 5 in the second sprint race (two sprint races every race weekend with the second race being somewhat longer) back in ca 1998? not sure this would work out with the current format of F1 races though. probably wouldn't work well at all unless you adobt a format similar to what the BTCC had

It's a bit more complicated than that; BTCC is a handicap series that uses success ballast, and reverse grids for the first 10.

I don't think that would go down well in F1!
