I just purchased an 07 Police Interceptor. The car was a homeland security car and has strobes on the rear lights/brake lamps and front driving lights. The lights on the front flash white or clear and the brakes obviously red. I know blue is illegal, can't imagine why I'd turn them on other than "f-ing" with my brother but is it illegal to turn them on a state/city road. Can't find any local info

    thanks

Yeah strobe lights are illegal and for "offroad use only". If caught with them on you will get a ticket for impersonating a police officer.

The laws vary state to state. Many states allow amber strobes for the safety of construction workers, tow trucks and other non-emergency vehicles. But be sure to check your local laws FIRST.

FWIW, lots of farmers in my area have amber strobes on their trucks to aid in safety when they may be parked roadside next to their property. I don't know of a single instance in which they were harassed or even questioned by the police. But I would under no circumstanes use them in any situation where it isn't obvious that their use increases not only your safety, but the safety of others.

I bought an old police car awhile back and had a friend who worked in the shop that had the repair contract for the police cars get me a light bar for behind the grill. I didn't even get a chance to use it, I was in a fender bender on the way back home. No real damage except the grill was destroyed leaving the light bar exposed! I was too afraid to leave it in after that.

I would assume just having them on the car would be a fine. Using them most likely a felony. Just take them off and mount them in your basement.

Got any pics? I've always wanted an interceptor, I'd even take a Marauder.

    Lol.

I hate retirees in Crown Vics. They know they're giving me a coronary every time I almost rear-end them on the freeway,

Yeah, any pics? Marauders are beasts, just the sound alone. Sounds so aggressive.

And they always have crap on the shelf behind the rear seats where there would be lights. I swear they do that on purpose!

    this is all I got.
It is an 07 w/ 3k miles. It is tough finding such a low mileage P-71 interceptor.

Your not a cop, so, why did you choose to get a Police Interceptor? Just to scare the crap out of people? :D

I run to my farm about an hour away to hunt- great car for the interstate. F-car won't make it across the creek driving in and I'm tired of the SUVs.

Have you ever turned the strobes on at night when behind someone for laughs?

actually no I'm too chicken sheit - chances are that person would be a cop.

The only time I'd flip them on is if there is a road side emergency

Illegal to turn them on - its not just the color but where they are (in the lights).

In almost all states you are only allowed either orange or green and generally it must be that color while off (no clear lenses) and AFAIK on the TOP of the car.

We manufacture some emergency (police) car lighting and a lot of folks look to get it for a street car - the cops don't mess around with that stuff in my experience. If they even see the light bar or the strobes in your lights (even if not on) they will run your plates and often pull you over to see WTF - they hate people impersonating and take it very seriously and will usually do it just to check you out/harass you a bit/make sure you're not impersonating.

No wonder this country is going bankrupt. Selling an 07 homeland security car with 3K miles!?!? And leaving on strobes? I'm surprised they didn't sell it with radios & geiger counters.

    In Lamens terms;

The objects in your room, the computer screen you are looking at is composed of stable atoms. By next year, it is highly likely that same screen will still be in tact in its atomic structure. If the atoms become unstable, they leave, and the objects deteriorate. But the fact that atoms are becoming unstable in a specified area is dangerous, also affecting humans. Human flesh is also composed of atoms and will in fact deteriorate when it comes into contact with an area full of unstable atomic activity . A geiger counter counts particles that fly out of orbit from their atomic structure. The few particles it counts, the safer the area. The more particles it counts, the more dangerous the area. If the needle tips over to the highest reading and makes a solid noise instead of a slow ticking noise.... you will die in a few weeks or less.

It is a handy device to have with you when touring Chernobyl.

I use to be a volunteer fire fighter and white/red was required and legal. Just curious, how can this be construed "impersonating" an officer if lights while displayed are not active? An officer can not pull you over because of white/red lights - what is the cause or suspicion?

To clarify the strobes are mounted w/in the light assembly and are only visable if turned on. Otherwise you'd never know they exist.

Let me pose it another way - are lights other than "blue" legal on a vehicle while not activated or do I need to remove all the factory light assembles and remove the strobes w/in?

It is safe to assume that the "protect and service" guys get a little irritated when you play around with the color blue on your vehicle on public roads. (Or, whichever color warning light is designated for the Protect and Serve guys; ie: red/clear - New York, Blue - Georgia, etc.)

Even inside the Peoples Socialist Republic of California the strictest state nearly isolated from the Union, I have seen a volunteer firefire pickup truck with red/clear rotating emergency lights and strobes flashing at an emergency scene with Highway Patrol directing traffic.

The Peoples Socialist Republic of California's 'protect and serve' warning light colors are red and blue, while medic/fire colors are red/white. The Vehicle Code book makes an interesting entry regarding the use of red.

    Use of Red Warning Light
VC 25269. No person shall display a flashing or steady burning red warning light on a vehicle except as permitted by Section 21055 or when an extreme hazard exists.
