Hi guys, I've just started the 308 after a good few months. It took me a while to get her started again. For some reason it was pretty hard this time. The battery went flat after 5 or 6 trials, so had to charge it again. So the battery might need to be replaced at some point.

But now I hear this creepy ticking sound coming from the distribution belt area. It sound pretty sharp and uneven, there is no particular ritme. I did hear it before, for some years, but it goes away. like something is hitting something else. I really need to know what it is, because all things near the belts give me the creeps...

Anyone with the same issue? Or do you know what it could be? Is it the belts? They seem in OK condition, they are 9 years old but didn't have a rough life. I think they ran 5000 miles. Or could it be the bearings?

Any thoughts are welcome. The car will go to a specialist for a major service anyway, but always nice to hear your thoughts guys. It's been about 6 years since I drove it regularly. That's what happen when you get kids :-(

    Greetings from Belgium
    Kris

I have heard this on older Ferrari cars and it is the accessory belts "ticking". It goes away after a few seconds and I have never had a failure from this and my customers were okay with the explanation and not interested in a solution. I have not researched to see why it happens.
I have not had one do this in many years though.

That's a strong clue that it is v-belt slapping as MerlinTech indicated (and the low wrap angle on the 308 AC idler pulley is a poor design prone to slapping). Certainly, fresh (soft) v-belts that are properly adjusted can work well, but a quick spray of v-belt dressing a couple times a year would be no sin IMO to prevent with the noise (if the adjustment still seems quasi-reasonable).

Had a similar issue - when belts are very cold they don't seem to grip well and given some of the angles/curves, the 'ticking' sound starts. As per the advice in the thread link below, I sprayed a small amount of 'belt dressing' on the belts (careful to only get the belt) and it immediately solved the problem. The belt dressing improves the flexibility and grip of the belt. Simple and cheap fix. https://www.walmart.com/ip/CRC-05350-Belt-Conditioner-7-5-Wt-Oz/102869597

Hello Kris, the sound likely disappears after some minutes. If the ticking is not too hard it must be the A/C belt. I posted elsewhere to have a harder ticking sound as per below clip:

This seems to be from a leak in the exhasut manifold which i can only check after a week or so (need time and to lift the car).

A day later, started her up again, and this time no ticking sound. It's a sound that is there sometimes, but also goes away. I'm pretty sure it's not exhaust related. I'll have to check that belt dressing though. Also I will change the belts entirely, since they are 9 years old... Many thanks guys!

treat the acc belts with silicon spray on a regular basis ... especially after a longer period of storage

I just took the 308 out of storage after 5 months ... hopped in the car, drove for 20miles for a quick test of components

and immediately went for a 300 miles trip across the alps from Germany to Lago die Garda in Italy without problems :)

    arrived in the rain

You should be aware that a belt's lifespan is not merely due to light vs daily use, but also purely time. Just as with tires, they should be replaced after a certain amount of time whether they look bad or not.

If it's making some weird noise, the proper solution is not spraying stuff on it. The belt noise is telling you there is a problem that needs to be fixed.

Not necessarily. My belt does it anytime it’s cold. Sounds horrible. Belts can be new and still do it.

Why not remove all the accessory belts, start the engine, and listen for the noise. Then replace the belts one at a time listening for the clicking noise with each reinstallation. That way you'll ascertain if it's an accessory belt or something else. You can let the test span three days so the engine has time to cold start. You can run the engine without the belts for a short time with no damage.

I had ticking too... then I took the belt off of the non-functional A/C and now have no ticking.
