    Hello fellow Ferrari enthusiasts,

I am in the process of planning a complete respray for my 1978 308 GTS. However, I've noticed a discrepancy in the positioning of the wing mirrors on either side of the car.

Before proceeding with the respray, I wanted to consult the community to ascertain if this is a normal variation or if it might be a result of a previous owner's "lovely" installment.

I've attached photos of both sides of the car for reference, such that if they are not positioned correctly, I will close the holes and redrill as necessary. As one can see on the driver's side it is much more positioned forward than that of the passenger's side.

That's normal. If you put it as far forward as the driver's side it will be behind the wing window vertical bar and will be mostly useless.

in that case can the drivers mirror be brought backwards, i.e inline with the passengers? So they are in line?

You can put the mirrors where you want them, but to be as original, you should put them where the holes currently are. FWIW, all Porsche 911s of the same era had the same positioning to make them both visible from the driver's position, because those cars also had wing windows.

At least with early model's, all the cars left the factory with only 1 mirror on the drivers side. All of the passenger side mirrors were Dealer installed just like radios were. The location of the passenger side mirror would be completely at the discretion of the Dealer mechanic that installed it!

    I do appreciate symmetry.
Did you know, that the new Corvette exterior mirrors are not the same length? I had to tell my friend in Florida this and he had to go measure it. He had no idea.
    I'm A-type.

Can't say for sure but it's possible Euro cars didn't even have a pax side mirror out of the factory.

I made the mistake once of putting the right mirror in the location that made it functional on a 308 I restored. That made it asymmetrical which the owner disapproved of. I had to take the door off, take it back down to the door shell and repaint it then put the mirror where the owner thought it looked best but you couldn't see out of it. Now I ask first, looks or function. I prefer no right mirror personally.

This has been discussed before. A 78 wouldn't have had a factory passenger mirror, so there is no "correct". I know by the time of the 83 QV in the USA the passenger mirror was standard, electric, and wired at the factory, with a control on the driver's armrest, and positioned similar to how yours is positioned. More rearward so when you look over, the view of it is not blocked by the window track. This probably was done sometime on the 80-82 GTSi, but I'm too lazy to go research exactly what year it happened.

And...The carb 308s had driver's side mirror positioned differently on euro versus US cars.

I acquired a pass side mirror for my 81 GTSi but am reluctant to put it on for the asymmetrical reasons stated above.

Where did you find one? I’ve been looking for a right side mirror for my 81 as well.
    Thanks

    Hi Jay
What mirror are you looking for? Vitaloni Turbo or a flag mirror?

Flag. I’ve tried GT Car parts but they were unable to find one at the time. I have not gone through that excellent list you sent me (I’m lazy and when I saw the above I thought I’d try the “easy button”). This is my drivers mirror.
