Found a set of E60 M5 wheels earlier and the owner is asking $750 plus shipping. So I performed my own investigation concerning refurbishing to new condition and I was quoted $175 per wheel which sounds reasonable to me. When I confronted the owner with this information and offered him $450 shipped he asked me to remove my post. He also said he runs a Houston repair shop, from Cali, and his shop only chargers $40 per wheel, he was not happy with my reply of "You get what you pay for".

Was I wrong? Here are pictures of all four wheels, you be the judge...

If his shop does it for $40..why the hell didn't he just do it before trying to sell them?

Because he is a shyster/scammer and did not expect to be caught and called out. The local wheel repair shop I spoke with said the wheels in their current condition are barely worth $100 each. The seller thinks just because they are M5 wheels they demand a premium.

Don't you need to know how much new ones go for to help determine value? If they are $400 new, then you are right no sense paying more than $100 plus about $175-200 to refurb.

If they are $600, then wheels are worth more than $100. When most of the wheel refinishers get done, you can't tell them from new. I would be in for somewhere between 50 and 70% of new, including extra shipping (back and forth to wheel refinisher, either one way or pickup locally if local dealer has the best price).

You also need to know desirability. If rears fit on the front (helps reduce understeer and you can rotate tires with a square setup), then rears will be more desirable and valuable and fronts less so.

    Regards,
    Jerry

    Jerry,
The cost of new wheels is irrelevant simply because these wheels are not new, they are beat to hell and are almost 10yrs old, should these facts not be considered? For S&G's I called BMW West and they quoted me $635 per wheel for the front and $685 per wheel for the rear for E60 M5 wheels so $1270 + $1370 = $2640 yet these would be brand spanking new.

    I do my research.

    Great info with pricing!

I would easily pay $200 per wheel all in (shipping) plus $175 refurb (all in).

After refurb, including straightening, you have round, straight, cosmetically perfect wheels and save over $1000 over new. Your wheel color may actually be better matched, because they are all done at the same time. New wheels come in batches, and you may see minor color differences in 4 new wheels. Most dealers will not take back a wheel just because the batch doesn't match. If you have a relationship with your dealer, he will probably let you pick through the wheels and pick 4 that match perfectly (if you are OCD about your car, like most of us here!!!).

If you put 4 new side by side with 4 properly refurbished, you would not be able to tell the difference.

Wheels don't really get used up over time. They do get cosmetically beat up. That is why you do the refurb. But if the wheels are not worth that much to you, that is your judgment call. I don't see anything wrong with used wheels and saving over $1000, assuming no structural defects.

    Regards,
    Jerry
