Hey guys, For the QQ (Historic) plates in NJ in the application process it states that you must provide a document stating your car's low production numbers, etc. Question: What kind of document did you provide when you got your QQ plates? -------------------- Long story short: my '76 308 was always on Collector Vehicle sticker. Even it is over 25 years old, DMV never told me I could not keep it on Collector Vehicle. Today, when I went to get my Odometer read, they told me - sorry, can not do this anymore - you must get QQ plates or put it on regular plates. So, I'm going to do that, just was curious about question above. Thanks.
That's news to me....maybe just quote the production numbers (very low compared to "normal" cars) and the age. Why do you want to go with QQ plates vs regular plates? Are you worried about emissions? I have a '78 beetle that we still run regular plates- I don't like the technical restrictions on QQ plates (only can be driven to and from car shows), although I'm sure most people break the rules...ther is one or two days I'm actually stuck driving the beetle when my normal daily driver is in the shop, and I often use it for weekend errands so didn't want QQ plates. You need to find a friendly service station to get you an inspection sticker every 2 years, and you're good to go on regular plates!
Andrew, Yes, you are correct I am a bit concerned about emissions. With these older cars, the garage would have to be very friendly. I just read the DMV website (looks like something has changed) and according to the site today - they are not asking to prove limited numbers on car, etc in the application. According to site, the Wayne office is also able to provide the QQ plates in person.
All you have to prove is that the car is 25 years old and that is all. I just registered my Porsche 71S
Mike, Review the differences as well for the collectors car registration process in NJ, I have seen several F-Cars here in NJ with that type of registration and there is no need to go through emissions. Cheers, Rhett
Hi Mike Does NJ still emission test a 76 car? [Thankfully for me, in NY anything older than 25 years is exempt from emissions. Had it been different I probably would not have bought a carb 308.] Best wishes David
Hi David, Hope you are enjoying your carbed 308! ;-) Collector or Historic vehicles in NJ do not get emission tests. However, the new rule they seem to enforce is that if your car is 25 years and more you have to either get it on Historic plates or regular plates. (regular plates would get emission tests).
Hi Mike, Renewed the collector plates on my '74 BMW Spring of this year; guess I just made the cutoff point re: QQ plates?
Hey Len, Welcome to DMV. ;-) My car is 2 years younger and they told me no on collector renewal at the odometer check, although they sold me the voucher at the clerk desk few days earlier. Go figure. They have strict rules, but it all depends on if they feel like enforcing them. You seem to have found a cool inspection station.
Consistency is definitely not something you'll find at DMV! It took about a month to get the collector sticker. They kept telling me that for some reason Trenton could not process the request. I usually go to Paramus; if I really want a headache I'll treat myself to Lodi...
I have QQ's on my '66 E-Type - there was no document I needed to provide, that's either something new or a mistake. No need to get regular plates. No one will bother you if you drive with QQ plates, and you don't need to get emissions tested.
Ok, got my QQ plates. Here is what I learned. No window stickers to get, or visits to the inspection stations for safety/emissions needed, etc - just renew registration by mail when it is due to keep your QQ status up to date. I printed the form from a DMV website and brought what was needed with it (Application, collectors insurance name and policy number, front and side photo of your car, and $44 payment) to DMV today. I did not need to prove any "limited numbers made of cars" documents or anything like that. Some DMV offices in NJ can process the plates right there, so you do not need to go to Trenton. That was the case in the Wayne station on route 23. It took less than half hour to take care of it. Thanks to all that gave input! Mike.
Mike Only half an hour in a NJ DMV???? I was believing your story up to that point Seriously, glad you got it sorted. And you are going to appreciate this... My 308 is still at Steve's shop! Back soon he says. David
Hi Dave, Ha, ha - I'm not kidding it was actually quick. Ok, so it is your red 308 that I keep seeing at Steve's shop! I just saw it last Friday ... I dig the car! When my 308 was also waiting in the wings - Steve had both of our cars on the lift in the back room (where Signature keeps their cars) .... Yours sitting on the floor and my on the lift post. There were two lonely carbed 308's together there for a while in a corner - both were our cars, ha. Hope you get your 308 soon!! I have been having fun w. mine. They sound so killer in cooler weather when they warm up.
