Is anyone familiar with Prugna? It is described below in an ad for a 308 that I am interested in. Any comments on where the pricing should be on this vehicle given its provinance and its special-order color?
Beautiful special-order color! "Prugna" means 'plum' in Italian, so its a dark metallic burgundy that has hints of cinnamon in it. Popular in Europe, not often seen here. Not only is this the original color, it is the original PAINT! Never damaged or resprayed, and completely rust and corrosion-free. It has always had excellent care. A very comprehensive major service two years and 400 miles ago that included timing belts and much more, plus new tires all around. This Quattro-Valve is complete with all of its original keys, books & tools, plus a thick file of all the past records. The interior is immaculate!
He will sell the car to me for $36,500.

So what are you asking?? Are you questioning the color? The resale value? Relative price versus red or another color? Color combination? Interior color? Nice write-up but where are you going with your question.

It is more valuable to someone that likes the color. Red/tan will always be the "color" for classic Ferraris that demand more value. If you like it, then go for it. The different colors can sometimes help, or or sometimes hurt the value.

We are quite happy with the color prugna. In our case it is paired with a crema interior. [see avatar]

If the car's condition is as described and with your limited description then the price is approximately fair. Bobileff has a QV in prugna for sale and Fantasy Junction also had one for sale recently.

I guess I was trying to grasp the color, even though I do have pictures, it is alway hard to really get the feeling of the color. The car had always been serviced by the authorized Ferrari dealership. I also wanted to get a grasp of value for the car in what was discribed as very nice original well cared condition. Thank you.

Well, looks like you are considering an all original car with complete service records and a recent major in a not so off color at a fair price considering all the above. Not a whole lot more one could ask for. Prugna is a nice color, better than white, and with a tan interior is a great color combination. Most of the Prugna 308's that I have seen have black interiors which does not show as well as tan and thus probably hurt resale value some. If you like it , PPI it and buy it if it checks. Continue to maintain is as the PO and it will increase in value.

Prugna is rare and is always a great color whenever I see it over the years. It is unique without being trendy or odd. Go for it!

That's pretty solid - I saw a Prugna 308 at the 'old' FoNE dealership about three years ago getting some good work done. I liked the color combo.

As Doug posted, some people will find value in the color. Others won't.

I have seen prugna in person several times, and it reminds me of the aubergine on the old Porsche 911s. It was a standard color offered, though as you say it isn't common. 308s and 328s look good in most colors, and I think prugna is one of them. I don't think it will ever be more valuable than the much more common red or black, but if you go to Ferrari events you will be able to find your car at the end of the day. (When I had my black met. 328 up in Monterey/Concorso 2007, our judging category consisted of 9 top notch red 328s and my car. My car won.)

Would I buy prugna? No. But if the price is fair and you like the color, I wouldn't call it "saleproof" by any means. If you decide to sell someday, just know that it may take a bit longer.

Also, I think you need to see the car in person before getting overly excited about its condition. It's not unusual for a 308 to have its original books and keys, and new tires are small potatoes. Good luck!

I am sure you are describing the car at Ferrari of Denver. I also had some interest--I am a big prugna fan myself.

Bill the GM there was the car's 2nd owner. It is in very original shape and has not been driven much in the last several years.
I think $36K is a little high and I would hope there may be some room in the price. ;)

I agree that you need to go out and see the car and drive it yourself if you are serious.

Considering the car is sitting on a Factory-Authorized Dealership, that carries some weight. Also considering that the GM owned the car, one can be sure that all service work done was performed by Factory-trained Staff techs at the Dealership (not some shade-tree greasemonkey), AND the Dealership will be standing-behind the car. That is worth alittle extra just for the peace of mind and service guarantee. It is a Rare thing to see such an automobile on a Dealership showroom.....

    Agreed.

Looks like it needs some minor restoration/detailing under the bonnet, but it's probably a primo car considering where/who.

Since i am on the east coast, enclosed delivery could range anywhere from $1200 to $2000, depending on how full the carrier's load is. That is working against me as I would rather have it in my pocket than give it to the delivery company. I agree, a Ferrari dealer selling a car does carry weight, espcially one so old. Bill, the Sales Mger, bought the car in TX, it origianlly came from Ferrari of Houston and Ferrari of Denver has serviced the car since. He vouches for the car, then again, he is trying to sell it. He told me they have had it for only a week and one half. I have looked at quite a few slugs in the 25K range and they would all need about 5K just in service, nevermind in appaearance. I have copies of the most recent service, less than 400 miles and 1.5 years ago, with new tires and refinishing the wheels, over 7K. He would not move on price, again sometimes a good sign. The only two negatives on the car, a cell antenna on the R/R fender, just the base now. In the interioir, a matching leather pad with the chrome hose on it covering where the cell phone was mounted. As to color, the condition of the car is paramount to me, as long as the color is not horrid. I plan on buying a keeper and this appears to be as close to any that I may find. I would rather spend a little more on the front side than on the back side. Anyone familiar with Ferrari of Denver and its reputation?

When I had my QV shipped from NJ to St. Louis I talked to 3 different carriers. The lowest turned out to be Horseless Carriage by several hundred dollars.

I really like the color. My 1st choice was Nero metallic, which I have, However if I have always liked the color Prugna. It would be my second choice , especially with a tan interior.

Good Luck, try to get the seller to help with shipping charges.

If it wasn't so far West I would consider picking it up for you, but I can't beat the Big Guys on the cross country hauls. I would recommend Horseless Carr. if you do have it shipped. No gains from me at all here.

As a long time owner of Prugna let me say that the complements are endless. I have yet to meet someone in person that does not adore the color. Enjoy it in good health.

When I was looking for a Mondial in 2001 or 2002, it seemed like every one that was for sale was Prugna. It was weird!

I like all the "off" colors, though.

I'm not fond of Prugna myself but if it floats your boat, I would just fly out with a check and drive it home. Bill Orth has always been picky about his personal cars but I believe he sold this car more than 13 years ago so a lot could have happened in the meantime. It has not been for sale very long. The price is pretty good for a car with great records and a very extensive service not long ago.

I'm not into Prugna either, I think the solid colors (red, black, white, yellow ) look better on sports cars than metalic colors., BUT, your not buying it to impress anyone but you, so if thats the one go for it!

I met Bill Orth (if that's the Bill you're referring to) and he's a good guy -- also has owned at least a couple of Ferraris (this 308 and a white 328). A friend who bought a 355 GTB from them also seems to have been a happy customer, although there were some issues with the major service performed (leaks) and FoD had to do some rework. But, they did that at their cost and were very cooperative.

It sounds like the deal's already underway, but considering Denver is easy to fly to (UAL hub) I would book a flight and make sure you like the color. Also, Bill could walk you through the car, and you could get the newbie orientation. Plus, FoD is a nice place to visit.

What you may find over time is that color is extremely important to you, and it's not really something you can change. All of these cars look different in person. I work with art/design people as part of my job, and their first warning to me is always to avoid judging colors by what you see on an LCD computer screen.
