I recently purchased a BBi and have been looking at the mods Mark Pearson did on his BBi in Forza and another thread here at FerrariChat. I like the idea of the coilover Konis, SL Comp wheels and Z06 Brakes. Though I think I want to start my project with getting the car as light as possible. I'm looking for ideas that are practical to reduce weight, more mild than wild? Does anyone know why the Boxer gained weight over the years? The 365 BB is something like 3100 lbs and the BBi is 3400 lbs, is this true? If so what in the world did Ferrari do to the car to add so much weight?

Bumpers are the largest part of it, one would think.....congrats on finding a car did you post the story anywhere???

I think the car actually changed dimensions overall as well, the rear clips are totally different.....

Maybe the injection system itself weighs more than carbs did....;)

I should weigh the airboxes for the BBi as they didnt feel light. The rear clamshell does feel like it is heavy.

    Good day SuicideDoors,

    Firstly, congrats on your purchase!

Secondly, the rear clamshell is actually very light (as least for the BBs anyway), as it is made from Aluminum (as well as the front and parts of the doors, etc). When I did my engine out, I only needed a 2nd person to help remove the clam so as to not damage anything (it is kind of bulky for one person to lift off).

You may wish to talk to Mark to see if he has a handle as to what items were overly heavy... I think the majority of the weight will be the frame itself, as it is pretty stout. An obvious weight saver will be the replacement of the stock exhaust system if it is still on. Using a single canister from Bell, etc will certainly shed some weight compared to the original four (2 resonators, 2 mufflers) can system.

    Cheers,

    Sam

I thinking about getting the Nouvalari exhaust at $3850 for the BBi, just wonder what it sounds like?

Another source for the weight difference between the 365 and BB is that the 365 was listed without A/C as standard equipment.
Also had a wet-sump instead of dry, so you carry an extra pump, hoses and a cannister.

I have a single can Bell polished SS Classic Car exhaust on my BB512i and it looks and sounds great. It weighs less than just one of the resonators of the OEM exhaust system. Plus, it only cost ~$2,000 USD depending on the current exchange rate... It took about 4 weeks to get after I placed my order. http://www.bell-silencer.co.uk/exhausts.html

The price certainly is right with the Bell exhaust. Can anyone comment on the sound/performance difference between a single can like the Bell compared to the dual cans on something like the X-OST and Tubi?

First purchase for this project has been purchased.

I went with the Nouvalari SuperSport Exhaust for $2700 including shipping. I considered the Tubi at 5k and the X-OST at 4k but in the end felt that the Nouvalari offered the best value. My car should be starting its major service within the next couple of weeks and will post more information and pictures later.

I lowered my BBi about 1 3/4" using rebuilt Koni adjustables and new springs from Eibach. Huge difference in appearance. I would have done the Brembo upgrade, which requires at least 17" rims.

This is on my list for this project but first I am going to do the major service install the nuovalari exhaust and while the engine is out media-blast and detail the engine compartment. The 17" rims on Carobu's website aren't exactly my taste hopefully I can find some other options and sizes when that part of the project is underway.

I'd look at engine/road clearance pretty hard if you go the lowered route. A sump guard could prove valuable.

Agreed that the 17s are a little showy. Never been a fan of the bolt circle pattern, but that's just me.

Carobu did my suspension work, along with some paint detail. There are other wheel options in 17"-18". I believe BBS makes one, I cannot remember the company name of the one I chose. I would have highlighted the Brembos the best.

If you use the correct diameter tires, road clearance should not be a problem. Of course I live in the flat part of Florida.

    Good day,

The last time I spoke with BBS they said that they were not making any Centre-lock rims for the Boxers. That was a few years ago and so this info is not current. I may be mistaken, but rim options for non-oem Boxer Centre-lock rims is very limited ... maybe 2-3 companies?

    Cheers,

    Sam

I have been doing some research on wheel and tire options for the BBi.

The stock tire size on the 365BB/512BB and did any BBi have 15” wheels is?

    Stock Tires Diameter
    215/70-15F 26.85
    225/70-15R 27.40

    Options for other wheel sizes

    225/55-17F 26.74
    235/55-17R 27.18

    225/50-18F 26.86
    245/45-18FR 26.68
    255/45-18R 27.04

    245/40-19F 26.72
    275/40-19R 27.66

18” wheels and tires might be the best size as you have the largest amount of tires available in the sizes listed without going too extreme. I wonder if the Z06 brake upgrade that Mark Pearson did would work with 18” wheels?

A little light reading for you, to fill in most of the gaps:

Some of the tire info is a little out of date, but still relevant.

The Nourvalari Exhaust has arrived. Thanks Glenn. I am going to perform a major service and engine compartment restoration so it will be awhile before the exhaust is actually mounted on the car and a review can be provided. I will say that Glenn was easy to deal with, did everything he said he would and I would recommend Nouvalari.
