PRODUCTION NUMBERS 1985 1986 SINGLE MIRROR TESTAROSSA

Well folks, it just seems to get better and better. My first question is, can we verify if indeed only 119 (85) and 299 (86) US spec cars were sent to the US? I assume this does not include cars that were privately imported. Also what are we calling a US spec car? Did the first US spec. cars have factory installed cats? I've also heard that the first US spec cars were delivered in late Sept. of 85. I do know that the sales receipt for my 85 is dated 8/28/85. I have confirmed this sale with the dealer. Now as to only US cars having a VIN # than indeed the chassis number should prevail. I understand that some of the info is conflicting but,this is exactly what we're trying to straighten out. As far as I'm concerned a US spec car is one that has an 'A' as the eighth character of the VIN code. That represents cars destined for the North American market and meeting all relevant US regulations. European cars have a 'B' in the same position, UK cars have a 'C', Australian cars have a 'D', Japanese cars have a 'J', Swiss cars have an 'S' and Middle Eastern cars have a 'T'. (As an aside, note that currently US spec cars also go to the Middle East, Euro cars to Switzerland, China etc., UK cars to Hong Kong, South Africa and so on).

How to read the VIN is explained more fully on Edvar's site: www.red-headed.com. I have the serial numbers of the 119 (85) and 299 (86) US and also some Euro cars imported into the US. I can let you have those in the next few days. I cannot guarantee those were the only cars in those years but cross-checking against the numbers you already have will at least show if there are any discrepancies so far.

61135 is the number of my 86 single lug. UK rhd car. Surely a rhd single mirror is quite rare? Anyone have any idea roughly what the rhd production numbers would be?

 

First off thank's for your help Jonathan, I've actually been in touch with Edvar while he's on his world trip. Their redheaded site is great and sure helps a lot. Unfortunely they have not been able to add any info while their on the trip. (We should have all have the courage.) Jonathan if it's easier to PM me the numbers, if your able to get them, that's fine.If the numbers prove to be correct (or as close as we can prove) this would leave 449 (85's) and 520 (86's) that were delivered outside the US. This would not include the 110 (84's) . As an aside I have reserved the domain name (flyingmirror.com) and will start to build a web site for just those cars. OK, just a quick hand count gives this:

Red/Tan - 27 36%
Red/Red - 19 25%
Red/Blk - 14 18%
Red/Crm - 5 6%
Nero/xx - 8 10%
Other - 4 5%

Total - 77 (if I counted right, did not make a spreadsheet)

So - some surprises to me:

a) while red cars look like about 85%, not far from what I guessed earlier, they are nowhere near all red/tan, on which I was wrong.
b) I sure would never have guessed we would see more red/red than red/black.
c) you might have thought there would be more white or black cars than we see here, given Miami Vice and the 80s.
d) If you have a car that is neither red nor black exterior, you are in a very special group

I do believe that a number of owners write tan when they mean cream. - just my opinion.

 

So, in the interest of accuracy, what exactly is the difference? (paint # code, actual appearance?)

I would just assume that tan is a little darker up the color wheel than the crema, which I would picture as a little lighter?

 

BTW, just got my Hemmings hard copy, and there is a 1986 Black/Black advertised, so I guess I will call and see what it's numbers are, in the interest of the record.

 

I am very surprised at how many you have been able to find ... either this site is very popular or there are more out there than I thought.

 

Even with all of the ones that are listed, but have no contact or owner info, that is a little over 18% of those produced, which I am impressed with at this early stage.

 

They say that this car has already sold, and the guy was not much interested in sharing the chassis number with me.

Wonder what the deal with it was, anyway? - it was only advertised at 48,500 or so. A real bargain unless there were some issues.

Maybe the new owner will see this thread and post his car.

 

Hi Folks, Sorry about the delay, I was away for a few days (which included driving the Testarossa of course). I plan to start working on the web site in the next few weeks. On the site we eventually hope to list as many current owners as we can and maybe include pictures of the car. I'am getting a number of PM's and listing as I can. I now have the numbers for the 85 and 86 North American cars. Too many to list here, so I'll be putting them on the web site. I can say that it appears there was indeed (119) 85's and (299) 86's shipped to North America. (Not many huh?) Now the question is how many came to the US and how many to Canada? I would think that only the US models would be smog equipted right? That would leave (449) 85's and (520) 86's in europe, asia, etc. Of course this doesn't take into account any converted cars that have come to North America. Ron

I have # 55783 being white as seen at the Italia a Zandvoort Event in 2000
I have # 62039 being black as seen at the Spa Ferrari Days in 2000
I have # 65303 being silver as seen at the Spa Ferrari Days in 2000

Also, # 58908 listed. Even numbers were not used until 75000 +
