No Andreas, this is not true. In an interview with Briatore in F1 magazine, Flavio indicated it was Fisichella that did the car development, not Alonso, and that is why he kept Fisichella knowing that Alonso was gone. He wanted continuity.

I agree the Renault will get better as the year goes, but not because of Alonso.

Alonso was lucky that Mclaren had Ferrari secrets last year to give them the big step forward they so badly needed.

I wonder if Renault now have some other team data because they would need that kind of "help" to make the same leap Mccheater did last year.

 

There is a fundamental difference between McLaren and Renault: McLaren were already 2nd. The Ferrari brake system gave them the edge to be able to compete with Ferrari.

Renault OTOH is midfield. A single technology secret like the brake system isn't enough to get them to the front. Only solid car development will do that, the perfect job for Alonso.

Williams and especially Nakajima look impressive in testing so far, I have a feeling that they could have leapfrogged Renault in the off season and be the #4 team behind Ferrari, McLaren, and BMW.
