Anyone ever had their ps pump rebuilt? My 82 400i has a pump that needs some work. Are their kits out there for a rebuild? Does anyone know where I can get a good used one?

I guess that "parts" 400 in Costa Mesa is out of the question :(

Why do you think you need your pump rebuilt?

    Ah, it broke.

Did you change the filter and flush the system? Also, grease the idler arm.

Most times these are the two issues that feel like pump failure.

That said, ZF North America will rebuild your pump for around $200.

All of that has been done recently. ZF is non responsive to questions about a rebuild kit.

The pump, apparently, is that same one used in some BMW 5 series cars, just not sure which ones!

Quite a few mid 60's to mid 70's models. I used to go to the Benz parts guys to get seal kits and filters for the reservoir. 280SE4.5 for example has the same pump but may mount differently. Some also had attached reservoirs. I never tried to use the entire unit but did use them as a source for parts.

Probably the same unit as some Maseratis such as the Indy (although this information likely won't help you much).

Probably an even rarer find than a 400i!

    Thanks, though.

Good news! Just had the pump rebuilt by a local rebuilder (in Canoga Park) that was suggested by ZF. Cost for the rebuild? $125 with a one year warranty! They said the pump was all seized up.

It'll be strange to have power steering after all this time...

You got something fixed on a Ferrari for $125 ????

<laughing> no way can't be done.

    Good job Kraig!

PS - I actually found that the brake light switch was CHEAPER on my Fcar than on my old Triumph TR6. How funny is that?

Yeah, and my Dinoplex is on the way out, and my new mechanic gave me a choice: A NEW Dinoplex for $1600, or an MSD unit for $200. I'm going for the MSD, but he's going to cleverly hide it and the wires so you can't tell :)

There are always cheaper ways to do things on a Ferrari if you don't want to pay the high prices!

I had exactlythe same thing done and it works great. I used the MSD 6 Offroad Ignition Control. It's encased in an epoxy compound, more durable and waterproof.

Mine is mounted under the right front headlight. The old Dinoplex and it's wiring are still there. It just doesn't make noise anymore )

Yeah, kinda hard to justify even $800 for a rebuilt Dinoplex, especially since my 400 is not a show car.

Maybe in 20 years I'll feel differently :)
