I checked all the fluid levels in my car yesterday, checked the power steering fluid level after 2 hours of driving and there is no "full" mark. The fluid was quite foamy.

Any one know how to tell if the fluid is at the correct level?

It seems it's time for me to get a new lid...:( I noticed just a little fluid at the base the other day and it seems my lid will just spin and not get tight!

Fairly common problem in our earlier 355's Reg, the thread expands due to the heat, mine is perfect at the moment. Do a search here, I remember reading about a possible fix for you. On newer cars (97+?) they changed the reservoir and used a much better design lid.

Some min and max marks would be a great addition to the older style lid.

Any one know how to check the level?

I have the newer style (I believe same as the 360) and it has marks on the cap / dipstick. Aside from that...I'd just keep it an inch or more below the top. Shouldn't be foamy though, unless maybe the level was very low and air was getting into the pump?

I agree Jay, this was the first time I have come across foam in the power steering fluid, it looks to be low but hard to tell given no level marks. I think I'll put some in there and check it again.

Anyone know what would happen if the reservoir was over filled?

+1 but I dont know why your fluid would be foamy. you may need a new fluid change.

If you read the manual it tells you how to read the 'dip stick' on the cap. I have a 95 and the manual say to read it after the car has been driven 10 minutes
(warm). the little dip stick is only about .75" long. At the top of the flat part (before the dip stick goes round) is the full mark. The tip of the dip stick is low.

    should be much clearer.

Thanks Mike, but my dip stick does not go round, it is flat the whole way to the cap, but about half way it turns into a cross (+) so I guess if I fill it to that mark it will be good.

I will not be out in it again for a few days, I fill it while warm and see if the foaming disappears.

I know I should dig through my manual but what type fluid does Ferrari use in the 355?

I topped mine up with standard power steering fluid and the bubbles and noise have disappeared. I added about 100mls.

sorry to bump an old thread.

my power steering is making a noise, so i figured the fluid is low. last time i drove, i noticed there was fluid all around the base of the cap, as vegas-guy discribed. actually thats happened a few times. i guess its just time to change the fluid.

so, i came on here to ask 1) which fluid (i see shell donax TA is recommended) and 2) how much?

also, i dont have a dip stick on my cap... it seems by the posts here that there should be

I have a 1995 355. Remember do not use regular power steering fluid. It actually uses ATF (Automatic Transmision Fluid), that's why it is red in color. I bought Castrol Dexron-VI Synthetic, got it at Autozone and it works great. As far as the leaking caps go, I was on the Ricambi website and it looks like there is an updated reservoir/cap replacement for the 95 year cars. It looks like the same one on the 360.
