I saw an add for this train on TV. It's out of Romney, WV. Has anyone taken it? It looks like fun.

I heard an ad for one of these train ride companies on WTOP radio here in DC this morning. They have a link on their website for further info, www.wtop.com. Apperantly the fall foilage is looking awesome up there for a train ride.

It looks very cool... then again I may be biased, my family has trains in their blood. My great uncle drove a switcher on the Illinois Central, and my father was the mascot when they christened the train "The City of New Orleans."

I know it well. It is something of a sad anthem to the days of rail. I had the privilege of riding across country twice, as a child, in a vista-dome car. I left Silver Spring station in the afternoon glued to the window as we climbed through cumberland, MD and down into Chicago. On to Ohio, Kansas, so flat and so vast; and the slow rise to the "high Plains." I crossed the Royal Gorge, Climbed the majestic Rockies and marveled (as only a child can) at the Painted desert. My son will never know that thrill. The term, "fly-over country" is so very melancholy, even by the sound of it. So much missed, and so much lost forever. Yeah, I'll take that one last ride. I am, after all, one of the last riders. Thank you.

This is the one in downtown Cumberland...pretty cool place also. Getiing tickets will be hard once the leaves turn but definitely woth it.

Make a weekend of it and do both...

Unfortunately, I have yet to have much of a real train ride. We are going to France (next year I think) and I absolutely HAVE to go for a ride on the TGV! I just have to figure out where to take the thing. We will be going to Normandy and Brittany.

As for The City of New Orleans, one of these days I will find the newspaper article on the christening. I know the date 4/25/47, but I haven't found an article.
