I am looking to upgrade the suspension on our '05 996 Turbo S Cab. It has the factory standard suspension (not X73), and desperately needs some help. All drivers of this car are track drivers, so whatever replaces the stock system needs to perform. At the same time, I don't need something 10/10ths for the street.

Several people have advised me on the X73 suspension, but I am skeptical about its performance compared to aftermarket packages like the H&R or Bilstein PSS-9 setups, and I do not care about the "factory originality".

Also, I'd prefer not to have the car completely slammed -- bear in mind the road quality where I live is not stellar. I think 1" would be maximum drop I could deal with due to daily occurence of inclines and speed bumps.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Yeah, if you want to talk about your new dubs, how much money you have, or argue about which car is better based on the crest on the hood, then sure, hit up 6speed. If you want technical answers, to technical questions, rennlist is the place to be.

The Pelican Parts forums are also pretty good for tech questions; perhaps more for older Porsches though.

There a few versions of the Pss9. You can choose from the, US spec, regular Pss9, RUF's version, FVD's version. I've ridden in a RUF Pss9 and it does include a rear sway bar. The ride was miles ahead of the ROW suspension that my turbo S coupe has.

Another coilover choice would be the H&R. The regular coilovers are only height adjustable but Cargraphic do sell their own H&R version called the Club Sport. It's two way adjustable, as far as I know, and it's a pretty good choice.

JIC Cross also offer coilovers for the 996 turbo. They have a choice of spring rates and seem to be a good choice if you want to go tracking on a budget. At least compared to the next choice.

The top of the line in coilovers are made by either JRZ or Moton. These tend to be more geared towards the track addict. Moton ClubSport seem to be the choice coilover. Another coilover package that has just come on the market is made by H&R. It's called the H&R highend package. It changes nearly all of the suspensions components for high quality, adjustable replacments. Uwe Alzen uses this package on his race car. This is probably the most expensive choice. Around $14,000 for the kit.

Good luck and if you need any more quistions answered, PM me here.

    Khalid,

thanks much for your response :) I am very interested in the US-spec PSS-9 system, but am concerned about ride height. I know it is adjustable, but do not know how much, or how tall the highest setting is compared to stock.

    Richard,

The ride height is adjustable on the Pss9. Best bet is to make it as close to ROW or even a little lower. You can't go too low, like on a GT2, on standard Pss9's. You will be riding on the bump stops and handling would suffer accordingly. You could adjust them to US ride height as well but I don't know anyone who likes the way the 996 turbo looks when it's that high, You might possibly be the first.:)

I don't like the look at all, but the road quality where I live is such that low-riding cars tend to lose their bottom bits pretty quickly :(

Thanks for the article link! :)

I would consider Penske triple adjustable coil overs with either Renton Coil titanium springs or Hypercoil springs. You have just about every adjustment that you need for street or track... it does not have to punish you either.
