Just wondering what everyones's thoughts were on the new 997 by Porche. I am doing a review for school and just wanted some opinions. From the added horsepower and tourqe due to the new overboost system with the variable turbines increasing the psi to 17.4 between about 2000-5000rpm. To the new twin clutch electromagnetic gearbox.

    Welcome to F-chat.

It has ugly wheels that look like they came from a Mitsubishi 3000 GT.

There are too many horizontal slats.

The LED turn signals in the front spoiler are downright TACKY.

The engineering, as always, is spectacular.

The 993 was the last great air-cooled 911 IMHO ...

the technology is top notch. style wise, it's a bastardization between the 993 and 996, and it doensn't even look good at it.

    style wise, 993>996>997.

In person it is really a beautiful car. In my opinion the wheels are arguably the best on any production car, with the M5's wheels the other contender for the top spot. I saw one of the first ever u.s legal 911 Turbos from the 70's today and think the 997 Turbo is a perfect evolution of the original design. You also have to love how Porsche hasn't given up on the 911 considering there is something always inherently wrong with where the engines located. Great car.

IMHO it would feel numb to drive / look at compared to a 997 GT3 . but in a straight line , explosive power all day everyday which would be hard to match . roll on the 997 GT2

These cars are monsters. Scary fast and built to be driven that way on a track all day, then picking up milk on the way home.
997 was built to "Un-Lexus" the 911 line.
GT-3 is where it is at though.

I went to the Dutton rally at Sandown raceway. A F430 and a 997 Turbo turned up, parked next to each other. The porsche got no looks at all. The Ferrari had a crowd of about 20 people gawking at it.

The Porsche is bloody quick, but sooo quiet, and the interior seemed kinda bland. That said, i'd still have one anyway

Very odd opinion since the 997 is MORE Lexus like than any previous 911, less connected to the road, less steering feel, too many conveinence features, and look how many buttons are on the center console........they might as well put in an I-drive and be done with it.

And the 997TT styling is just so goofy.

I like it just for the fact it is the top of the line porsche next to the GT. I wouldnt pay 125-150 for it though.
Saw one on the over the weekend, and the GF didnt even notice it, I told her what it is, didnt do much for her...again, the TT is for the sleepers and gearheads out there..

I just spent some time driving a 997 Twin Turbo last week. Bright yellow, with Nav and all the other goodies. Sticker was North of $140K+.

    My thoughts:

I have driven and owned several 911 turbos, this one was no more remarkable than any of the others (in their own right and vintage). The 997TT is no doubt a great car, but not over the top great. I enjoyed my drive time, but did not find the need to consider buying one. Sure its fast etc., but driving it feels just like the 996TT does, but with a much more "Lexus" like interior.

The example I drove had an upgraded exhaust that sounded super at idle, but of course at speed the turbos mask the tone to zero (probably a good thing).

Dont get me wrong, someone may feel its the best car they have ever driven, I personally think its just another neat car from Porsche.

The new 997 TT is a GREAT all-around car. If you had to have one car to be a daily driver and track car, this should make the short list.
It has lost the hard edge of the original 930's though.
That enthusiast moniker goes to the GT3 now.
I'd much rather have a 993 TT or better yet the 964 3.6 Turbo. But I'd never turn down a chance to drive the new 997 TT.

Just got my 997 turbo last week, already have 350 miles on it. Have not pushed it, still breaking it in. But this thing is a monster. I have been only taking it 4200 rpms but have pushed on the pedal and the thing takes off. Can't wait until it is broken in so I can really open it up.

Agree with this. It's a fantastic car if the styling is to your liking. But not what I want from a Porsche Turbo.

    I don't want seemless...I don't want refined...I want lag...lag..lag...BOOOOOM...and a dash I can still see bundled wires under.

    Give me a 94 3.6 Turbo or a 930 any day...

I like the new 997, the interior is nice, build quality seems to be great, and of course the engineering is always awesome.... I do still like the explosive nature of my 930.... My car weighs in at 2500 lbs and is right around the 500 Horsepower mark. You can drive it anywhere, and it still gets everyone looking. One of my buddies has a 996 and no one even notices it, the 930 attracts way more attention.

That particular picture from the OP has too many slots in the fender duct. There's actually only 1 slot like the 996 GT2. See pic: http://www.***************.com/pic.php?imagenum=10&carnum=2697

Either way, I think the car looks great, a lot better than the 996TT imo. The 997 GT3 RS looks fantastic as well. I still like the 993, but I think the regular 997 Carrera is better than the 993 Carrera. However, the 993 Turbo and Turbo S (hell, throw in the GT2 and GT2 Club Sport) are incredible machines. Still love them.

But when it's all said and done, give me a Dauer 962. :D

Haven't had the opportunity to drive one of the new turbos yet (the nearest Porsche dealer is over 100 miles from where I live).

Having said that, I really don't think that they (or anyone else for that matter) will ever be able to repeat the charm and "rawness" of the 930. I simply cannot get enough of my 930.

As nice and refined as the 997tt is, my next Porsche will be a signal yellow/black 993tt.
