Anyone know the (sad) story on this car? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4576887718&fromMakeTrack=true Someone needs a swift kick in the nuts for letting it get into this condition. Still, a good deal at ~10K?? I think probably not due to the horrors that are surely hiding down deep.
I'm not suggesting that this car is one of them, but over the next year or two, there are going to be a lot of bad cars on the market as a result of Katrina/Rita/Other storms. I'd be very careful what I bought sight-unseen, especially from areas effected by extensive flooding. As for this car, without doing a very careful inspection and knowing what's needed (like a major belt service in all likelihood, among other things he identified), I'd be very leary about taking a leap just 'cause it sounds cheap. You could end up paying $10K or more for a car that needs $20K or more in work and will be worth $18K or less when you're done. May not be the case, but without doing the PPI, you're shooting craps and likely to roll snake eyes.
Well, honestly, with its condition, unknown mileage, etc, i think the current bid is near max. If someone wants a driver to minimally restore with minimum expectations -this car is ok maybe. If some one wants to fully restore the car, they woould be better served to buy at a much lower price, I think.
A really nice Mondial 8 is worth 18-20 10,000 for this car PLUS: 3,000 Clutch 4,000 Major 2-5,000 electrics and similar problems 2,000 for interior work 2-3,000 for paintwork 2,000 for stuff I may be missing. Total, about 20,000- 25,000, not including all your time and effort. I think that answers your question.
"Odometer states 8000 miles, but its more like 48,000. Odometer replaced long ago..." Uh, did he mean to say 248,000 miles? No way it has 48,000 actual miles... Still, if it runs, a fun beater car for a couple of years...then part it out.
The worse thing abut the car may be the oil on the ground under the right hand side and what that might take to fix. Assuming (a BIG assumption) the engine/trany is ok - the known things (assuming you do them yourself) -major service - $1,000 - Clutch $800 - Turn switch - used $200? Seats and carpet $1500? (depending on who does the seats) - paint $4000 (who would spend $10,000 to paint a $20,000 car?) plus $2000 for the unexpected comes out to about $9,500. Any bid above $10,000 may very well exceed the value of the car. Although, it might offer someone an opportunity to join the club on the cheap and repair as they can - the big thing is the drivetrain and that just can't be determined by looking at pictures.
Yes...IF it drives. The ad says that the engine runs...never says that the car still drives. The engine compartment alone gives away that she overheats...and has overheated severely in the past. And how did the seats get that...mmmm...unique...wear pattern?? At that level of car you get into the area where someone will eventually buy it and put some old chevy V-8 into it (or Fiero 4 banger...maybe even Fiero transmission) just to be able to drive around saying that they've got a Ferrari. That, or someone will part her out (big hassle). The **dash** looked surprisingly good, though. As though the car had been garaged or covered. The frame might even be OK, though 1982 was before Ferrari started rust-proofing bodies. There **will** be rust on that car.
Purchase for $11K. Add tax, license, etc. Spend at least $20K to get into presentable shape. You might have a car worth $20K. A true Tifosi would jump at the chance to preserve this example.
Too late...but oh, the fun is just starting! A 0 ZERO feedback user just bought that Mondial from a 1 ONE feedback seller. So I'm starting a betting pool right here, right now, for seeing that car listed again soon...no way that auction gets settled.
Thats what I thought too! I have a coffee table with remarkably similar markings after Lumpfrey Bogart, my English bulldog, got a hold of it!
Very much so - it is a qv and a cab; should have good corrosion treatment from factory Offer to buy for 15, fix and service w/ belts for 4-5. It's in DC - would suggest Grand Touring in Laurel, MD for ppi and possible service
In USA yes!! In Europe no!! A nice Mondial 8 does about 22-23 euro's (US$26-28K) So counting for $1500 shipping to europe it could be interesting for us........
