I saw the grey prototype car on Monday at a FNA preview function. It's not as bad as the pictures illustrate but it still is awkward looking in the back. They did a great job translating the Ferrari DNA given the scale of the this car. I like design of the car up to the B pillar. Aft of the B pillar, it could be much better. This is one car you really have to see in person.
I love it, for me it has all the hallmarks of excentric Itlian design. IMO the best looking 4 seater Ferrari in a very long time!
Will the buyers " go ugly early " or wait for the "cash for clunkers" incentives? And God forbid, what else could be on the drawing board? Anyone say Lambo?
Continuing my senseless rantings; does anyone know if the back of the front seats have entertainment/ video systems or if there is a small fold down refreshment bar in the backseat area where the cheeseburgers will be eaten? Do I need to vote?
Lets take a look at all of Ferrari's true 4 seaters. Early 50's brought us the 212 Export and a few other 4 seaters....all ugly Mid 60's brought us some Superfasts....pretty and big same time frame started the 250GTE's and 330's. Wouldn't call them pretty...but they weren't ugly either...except maybe that 4 headlight 330...however in dark colors they aren't all that bad. In the late 60's and into the 70's we had the 365GT 2+2...again pretty, but big Early 70's and we have the 365 GTC/4....more of a real 2+2, but in the right color...not bad. Early to mid 70's we have the 365GT4 2+2...in my eyes...OK but not pretty. There was also the pinin...not bad for its time. THen the Dino 308GT4....OK, but not beautiful, especially when its sitting beside a 308GTB Never liked the Mondials that much and that pretty much brings us to the modern cars. The 456 is a pretty car and the proportions I think look pretty good. The 612 in person and in the right color can also look good...but it is big And now the FF. I think it is very interesting, aggressive and will most likely make a great GT car for 4 people. As they are probably only going to sell a 1000 or so per year...I think Ferrari will do just fine. I have probably missed a few 4 seaters...I think there were some 166 Inters that had 4 seats and a few others in the mid to late 50's...all beautiful in their own right...but some were only....how is it said...a face only a mother could love. Personally, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...to each his own. I applaud Ferrari for taking the chance, I like it and wish it well. Regards, JP
At age 80 this car would be great placing my handicap sign on the rear mirror Ferrari went crossover extreme ... very limited customer base as is every car over 350k If Ferrari could get guys to sign a 400k check for a Sessenta, they will sell at least 60 of this thing. I have a hard time thinking Ferrari owners are so loyal they need a 400k daily driver awd vs the Aston / Panamera at more than double the price. This flagship will depreciate heavy with maintenance horror stories! The good news is the 599 replacement should be incredible but they produced one heck of a sacrificial lamb. Improving the 612 styling with the FF engineering would have been a home run! This car will not push 612 owners feel the need like the 430 owners to a 458.
Doug- Welcome back. Good to hear from you again. Latest eye-witness report is around $300K base and $350K OTD. Less than a 612. Taz Terry Phillips
Thanks Terry! I agree base is 300k ... 458's base 225 with stickers north of 300k. Which lends me to assume the FF will tap 400k. Regardless - Pininfarina fell to receivership status / judicial appointed lawyers. Rumor is the government has plans for Pina to be involved in production electric / hybrid commuter cars. My guess this is the last Ferrari styled by Pininfarina. I understand Ferrari's theme song with this car - build something that has no competition! Can't wait to see the technology placed in a two seater!
I think the correct question would be "What do you think the first pictures of the new FF 2+2 released?"
The new pictures are more flattering. The few people who have actually seen the car say it is very nice. Sportier looking than the 612 which has a more stately look. The Geneva Auto Show is just around the corner...
Key word "next" ... if you disagree try checking out the sales of the FF trinkets! c'mon guys if this was a Ferrari's stockholders meeting - not one guy on this board would buy one share of this offering. The 612 owners should be sending Ferrari money in light of what happened to the 430's and scuds with the 458 introduction.
http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=218 I've read a few comments comparing initial reactions of the FF to the 612, so I figured I'd post up the results from a similar poll on the 612 from 2004. I think it is fair to say the FF isn't doing so well in comparison. On the 612, 24% were negative, 26% reserved judgment and 50% were positive. I hated the FF when I first saw it, but I'm starting to come around a bit. I doubt I'll ever buy one though.
With excitement, I came to this thread hoping to vote, but then I remembered I'd already voted for 'heinous'. Unfortunately I don't know if you can change your vote, and anyway, there isn't a 'more heinous than heinous how could it be allowed to live' option. Just, well, heinous.
UK price is indicated as a possible $213K including 20% by ISUK that would give a US base of $272K at current exchange rate. I think it will be less expensive than we all believe, resulting in some great bargains in used 612. I may be able to see it next week. As the Brits say "mum's the word "
Gary- That would be even better news and would definitely help sales. I think the FF may be like the California and open up new markets for Ferrari. That would help all of us since it gives them more money to invest in the harder core toys. Plus having a Ferrari you could take on a ski trip would not be a bad thing. Do not think it will be suitable for one of my fly fishing trips, but cannot have everything. Taz Terry Phillips
Ferrari is loosing me. They put all this effort into a car that they hope will sell 1,000 units per year. The car takes the brand in a new direction, further away from exotic sports cars. The 4 seater coupes, including the 612s, were always cars that cause people to say "that's a Ferrari?" But it didn't seem like such a complete stretch since they were still coupes and had some elegance. The FF is a hot hatch, and nothing more, except that it is expensive. Instead, Ferrari could have built a small, lightweight sports car, sized like a Dino. A foot shorter, 8 inches narrower and 4 inches lower than a 458. Eliminate techno-luxury gee-wiz junk, and offer it with a manual transmission, manual steering, seats etc. Price it at 200,000 and I'll bet they would sell 1,000 per year easily. Kirk
I have been reflecting on the design of the new FF and perhaps the biggest problem I have is that Ferrari seems to be intent on doing an Aston Martin and giving the whole range a similar looks, witness the 458 derivative lights on the FF. Perhaps more sad is that someone at Ferrari has forgotten true 2+2s like the 500 Superfast and instead given us something that dare I say it even more slanted to the American market, the new car was an opportunity to present the world with a pretty 2+2 and instead they delivered a huge anti climax with this mix of Alfa Brera(dont think you get that in the US)and 458. As for this car generating money, time will tell but I am pretty sure it will break new records for depreciating 2+2s.
Well I am off to Maranello to see the beast on February 22. Maybe just the ticket for Four Corners Territory. I could take you and Jan fishing if we tie the fishing rods to the optional Ferrari wind tunnel developed roof rails ! Carbon fiber of course !
