Going to Texas A & M this weekend to visit with my wife and high school senior daughter. She is looking at the chemical engineering school. We will be there Friday and Saturday nights and want to some fun places to eat so that she can see the town. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks
There are the run of the mill restaurants around town such as Cheddars, Olive Garden, etc. The more "unique" College Station restaurants are FitzWilly's, the original Freebirds, Dixie Chicken, Layne's, Blue Baker, Spoons, Koppe Bridge. There are a ton of places to eat here.
I have always wanted to checkout the Dixie Chicken from all the storys my ex-roommate who is an Aggie would talk about, especially when he used to drink beer there with Lyle Lovett.
You have to try a chicken fried steak baked potato Dont remember the name of the restuarant but anyone there will point you in the right direction.
No where. \m/ ^_^ \m/ ...although there was a really good pizza place somewhere near the campus, but I cannot seem to recall its name. I remember it had corrugated metal on the walls though.
If you like Italian, family friendly, & not a massive chain restaurant like everything else, try this. www.cafeeccell.com The only times I've been there is for event at TWS so I've been mostly limited to Freebirds, the Olive Garden, & the McDonald's / gas station closest to the track. (yuck)
Thanks for all of the replies. Looks pretty promising for my daughter. A & M has a great engineering school.
The Dixie Chicken is the best known place, but propbabley not the place to go for lunch on a visit - no offense to the Chicken, but.... The engineering school is great, but I graduated some time ago so can't offer current feedback. I would go to downtown Bryan. It is off the beaten path of the typical Franchise resturaunts that are typically hit on parents weekends and for visits and almost always have waits. The resturaunts in Downtown Bryan are mostly mom-n-pop type places with great food, great prices and a nice small town feel.
I'm heading up with my daughter for the same event. In fact, we're planning to drive the Ferrari and take a less-straight path than Hwy. 6. We'll see you at the Chicken...
Dixie Chicken. I spent most of undergrad & a lot of grad school there. Decent burger and cold beer. Gig'em!
I took my daughter to one of these weekends 2 years ago, there were 12,000 other prospective Aggies and their parents there. It was worth the effort but be prepared for crowds.
Do you know what you call an Aggie 6 years after they start college? Boss.... yes--I are an aggie!!!!
Try here: http://www.hullabaloodiner.com/ It's 10-15 minutes outside of Bryan/College Collegestation (5-10 minutes from Texas World Speedway). Great for breakfast too.
Ate at Fitzwillies last night and had the Widow Maker burger. 1/4 pounder with double cheese, deep fried bacon and covered in gravy. Pretty good.
It is. ...got a bit dirty driving through the fog Saturday morning, but I love driving on Saturday mornings. No one is out. Hope y'all enjoyed the weekend. I have a picture of my three daughters in Aggie gear over the fire place. Number 1 went to Auburn, so I have two more shots. This weekend helped a lot!
Just got back from A & M. Daughter really liked the school and there are a lot of interesting things happening in the School of Chemical Engineering. Got to speak with the Chair of the department who has a very interesting alternative fuel project underway. Dinner Saturday was at Freebirds which was pretty good, better than Chipotle. Looks very promising. Thanks for al of the replies and assistance. Did get the chance to help some guy push his blue WRX across George Bush in West Campus when his car died Saturday afternoon.
Next time you come to town and want to hit the 'upscale' restaurants in town, I suggest, in order of my preferences: Veritas: a fusion asian restaurant that is fantastic with a great wine list and wonderful service; ask for the chefs table if there is room, on University drive The Republic Steakhouse: steak, obviously, and a superb bar with the best single malt selection in town, on University drive, kinda dark and retro feeling Maddens: downtown Bryan and a great weekend lunch and dinner restaurant with a good wine list and top service Christophers: East side of town and a very good restaurant with large portions and a very decent menu of specialty and home cooking meals, and a homelike setting
Freebirds is great food and better than ANY burrito I know of..... The Engineering School isn't easy for anyone. It isn't easy for any nationality. It ESPESCIALLY isn't easy for a girl....... Please don't take that as offensive, but it is true. Not that a girl can't kick boys butt's, but the number of guys far out weighs the number of girls, or at least it did when i was there. Oddly enough, I was going through my transcript today and amazed at the course names from the early 90's...... They sound impressive today, but knowing the computer changes that have taken place since, I imagine they would be WAY DIFFERENT today......
I was going to suggest Freebirds. I lived in BCS for 2 years attending Blinn, a lot of my friends went to A&M so I was there a lot. It's a great city to live in.
I am a grad of M.E. from TAMU, Cl of 78', and recently retired. PM me if there is anything I might be able to help you with. I have a lot of friends, former business partners/associates and friends of friends that I have spent my share of time with, in support of their students seeking advice, help with problems, and guidance in general, etc. I also support a Presidential Endowed Scholarship and have a few dinners a year with the recipient. I have been heavily involved in the TAMU motorcycle club, trying to assist in providing life lessons on riding and survival and giving them a chance to ride and train at my personal riding facility. BTW, I ate at the Shipwreck Grill on Villa Maria tonite and it was excellent! Put that on your short list. Yes, I ate fried food, but they have a good grilled selection, too.
