The Redwood Room at the Clift hotel in San Francisco is one of my favorite places to hang out.. basically the Art Deco version of a traditional 'wood room' bar/lounge. Huge panoramic of the cropped image below: http://www.epop.com/hospitality/clift/redwood.jpg Image Unavailable, Please Login
which Trinity College? My mom went undergrad and grad at the one in Texas. I think that one must be in Europe though.
Saw a recent episode on HGTV of Million Dollar Rooms. This guy in Indiana had a $1.8mm great room, two floors, pretty much all mahogany. However, the best part of it was the solid mahogany spiral staircase with slide! He said a boat builder spent over year and 40,000 staples to construct it while the glue set. Cost $125,000 for the stairs. Picture: http://money.cnn.com/2007/10/08/smbusiness/Scott_Jones_2.fsb/index.htm
Ditto, so oppressive. We recently pulled off wood panelling from a large rumpus/dining room area. We left the ceiling and one wall, as a feature. The other walls we gibrocked and painted white. It is one of the best things we have ever done to the house. I will admit we left the window frames wood, but the increased light and feeling of space is wonderful. Pete
Cool thread. The previous owner of our house really liked wood, redid pretty much the entire first floor with it. All of the naturally shaped beams he cut down himself. The office has a paneled, dark wood ceiling while the kitchen, dining, living and sun room are lighter. The carpet in the office and living room could use replacing soon, we're struggling to decide whether to go wall-to-wall again or some other material. Hardwood would be too much, maybe tile or stained concrete in the living room (was the garage in the original house) with area rugs. Lorraine en France (1903-1906): http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexprevot/6204321848/in/photostream/ It seems to be very well crafted on the one hand, but one the other this living room "design" almost frightens me. I certainly would not want to live that way. Reminds me a little bit of Hogwarts. Lorraine was a center of coal mining and steel industry at that time. There was a very good documentary "Les hommes du fer" on the French-German TV program ARTE some time ago: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVQd4wcW0Vo[/ame] The program reflects the time very well, I think. If you browse this flickr site, you`ll find quite a bit of Art Nouveau, glass as well as wooden rooms and furniture. Here are some more photos (In case you don`t like the first pics, please don`t continue! There is an annual Art Nouveau festival at Brussels (Belgium) each year, but I haven`t been there yet. They are pretty proud of Victor Horta who did a lot of Art Nouveau work there. I think it`s one week in autumn and one can take guided tours in case anyone was interested.
O.k., here is another one. Back from the dark ages of the industrial revolution in France to the usually bright and sunny mountain resort of Pontresina (Engadin, Switzerland): Hotel Walther built by Ursolina Badrutt as "Hotel Palace of Pontresina" in 1905 to 1907 http://www.hotelwalther.ch/ The "Stüva" on the picture was built new in 2008 using local pine wood (Arvenholz/Zirbelkiefer). I like it very much as it is a well balanced combination of white walls and wood in my opinion. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ok, it's not a room and is not as sophisticated as these fabulous rooms. But I think Frank might have like it. Walnut root dug up by hand, (had amigo help), couldn't get a tractor to the location. If you like wood like I do. I felt morally obligated to share with wood and car guys. Rod Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
WOW, Thanks for this link.. I have such an affinity for wood.. This pic inspired me for more detail I will do on my garage project... Put a little Europa in it! I can highly recommended the Victor Horta Museum in Brussels. He did some wonderful buildings there that I've only seen in books, but I've visited the museum (which was his residence) twice. It's incredible. Couple a visit to the Victor Horta Museum with a trip to Autoworld Autoworld - Mahy and you'll give serious consideration to becoming a part-time resident.
Rob, this thread reminds me of the fact that Jerry Moore imported historic wooden interiors from France for his mansion in River Oaks in the 80s. Which gets me to thinking- don't rule out local/regional architectural salvage places. You may be able to buy a bar, or panelling, or other wooden decorative elements for your home that were originally part of an older building in Texas. You might be able to find and integrate some really great stuff going the salvage route.
