I had the pleasure to photograph (seperately) an original 1966 Ford GT 40 (built as a road car) and a brand new Ford GT. I would like to have photographed them both together... maybe some day. But for now I will have to be satisfied with this photographic comparison.

    regards

wait, which GT40 is the ford made to look like?

I thought it was supposed to look like the MK I, but the GT40 road car was a MK IV or something...

    whats the deal again?

Besides the side air scoops and the rear ... the old one is nicer to look at. They did a great job with it. Thanks for posting that.

Can you tell a little more about the red one - chassis no / ownership / history / location ? Anything like that

the red one is road going but the answer to the red one's question (if you see what I mean) is that the Mk 3 was the stretched proper road car with luggage space and central gear change and other allegedly civilising features

There were Mk Is built as race cars and street cars. There was also a Mk III road car of which only six or so were built. The Mk II was a pure race version with a 427 engine. The Mk IV was a completely new race car based upon the J car prototype. J6, owned by Jim Glickenhaus, is a Mk IV.

Here is the information on the car that I know.

according to the Ford GT40 Chassis Number database
    GT40 P 1072 03/68 : Croft, 45, Cussins, DNS - Castle Howard, Cussins, 3rd - Castle Howard, Cussins, 10th - 04/68 : Harewood, Cussins, 3rd - Woodvale, Cussins, 1st - Woodvale, Lawson/Cussins, 2nd/3rd - Harewood, Cussins, 2nd - 05/68, Croft, Cussins, 1st - Sandtoft, Cussins, 1st - Bardon Manor, Cussins, 2nd - Leighton Hall, Cussins, 1st - 06/68 : Harewood, 84, Cussins, 1st - Harewood, 84, Cussins, 6th - Tholt-y-Will, 41, Cussins, 1st - 07/68 : Boulay Bay, Cussins, 2nd - 08/68 : Shelsley Walsh, Cussins, 1st - 09/68 : Croft, Cussins, 2nd - Harewood, Cussins, 1st - Topcliffe, Cussins, 1st - 10/68, Olivier's Mount, Cussins, 3rd - Olivier's Mount, Cussins, 2nd - Castle, Howard, Lawson, 1st - Castle Howard, Lawson, 6th

It certainly looks like the car was raced successfully. I'm not sure if it was originally spec'ed as a road car or retrofitted.

Maybe Mr Glickenhaus would have more info as well...

Here are a couple more shots of the original. Look carefully at the interior shot and you will notice that it is right hand drive but very interestingly, the shifter is on the right as well. You will also notice that the tach is directly in front of the driver with the speedometer all the way to the left. I believe the current Ford GT maintained the dash board layout. Another shot shows the fuel switch from right to left tanks.

According to Ronnie Spain's book, 1072 was configured as a road car. It was hillclimbed and 'sprinted' by Cussins throughout 1968. While it may have a minor racing history it does not compare with the factory race cars. Many road cars have been used in local races or historic races, as they should be. This, of course, does not take anything away from 1072. It's beautiful, and you are lucky to have had the opportunity to see it in the flesh.
