    Hi all,

Im new to this forum thing so go easy on me, Im after treating myself to a car and will be ready to purchase end of next month and have been stuck between the decision between a Rosso 458 coupe, Rosso 458 spider, and a Huracan (always been a lambo fan since a child).
Whichever i choose will be a USED car as im not wealthy and realistically cannot afford any but im just going to buy one to get it out of my system.

Im after some advise and your thoughts on parking a 458 outside in British (Manchester) weather all year round?
I live in a townhouse with NO garage or drive with a allocated parking space round the side of the house, on the same estate people leave there cars outside such as a 991, AMG GT, E65 AMG, Bnetly GT, Boxter spyder, new Overfinch range rovers etc so there are some other nice cars left out.

The estate is pretty tucked away and is a culdy sac so no passing traffic or pedestrians.

    1. Are 458's a target for theft? Audi RS's have been notorious for being stolen in the area (Not far away a few houses in the past were broken into by masked men for Audi RS4s, and RS6s but never had one issue with my R8 as they always seem to go for 4 door 4WD cars)

    2. Will the 458 withstand the rain, snow (very rare), sunshine, rain, and a bit more rain?

    3. How will the 458 cope with the salts (grit for the ice) on the road during winter? as i will be using the car all year round and nearly every day (have a hand car wash about a mile away so will be in there once a week).

    4. Will i be better off just buying a Huracan as its just an R8 with typical german build quality to withstand the elements?

Im more on the idea of a 458 as the wife doesnt like any Lamborghini for some odd reason.

Please let me know your thoughts.
    Thanks

Hi I'm new to this, tried to post a longer thread earlier but not sure if it posted or deleated itself so il try again and get to the point.

Considering buying a 458 but don't have a garage or drive on my townhouse, Just allocated car space at the side of house.

    1. Is it a bad idea to park a 458 outside all year round in British weather? (Sunshine, lots of rain and sometimes a little snow and plenty of frost)

    2. Will a 458 be able to cope as a daily driver all year round including in a British winter? (Grit on roads during low temperature months and loads of rain)

    3. Are 458's a target for theft?

    4. Am I better off buying a Huracan due to being typical German build quality like my previous R8 to withstand the elements?

Im new to ferrari. I drove the 458 spider , 488 spider, mclaren 650s and the hurracan over 4 speerate days, about 350 miles in each hard driving. The 458 spider is the only one to go for, as the noise it makes at 9000 rpm makes everything look rubbish and eith the roof down when its on full chat its like being in an f1 car. My advice would be get 458 spider.

Dur to my bentley having a conversion done in it, my dailey driver is now the 458 and eill be for about the next eight weeks.

Things ive found so far. If your trying to use it as a dailey driver leave it in wet mode as your brain is elsewhere and not on "hard driving".

Car park parking is fun and a bit of a hike. Park as far away from the shops as possible in empty spaces and youll not worry about car park dents. Expect to find people takig pictures of the car asking you loads of questions every time upon your return.

It eats fuel. I thought my old v10 m6 ate fuel, but it eats fuel.

Get one with the lift pack if youve any intent of using multi story car parks. I forgot to press the lift button he other day and for a few seconds caught the front trim.

I boughtt a car cover from Car Covers, Caravan Covers & Motorbike Covers from Specialised Covers buy the luxury one. Works a treat as our garage is cutrently being rebuilt so will live outside until at least november. Takes about 90 seconds to put-on and fits perfectly.

So can you use it as a dailey driver - yes but it can be a pain in the backside with the attnetion it drawers. especially if you take it to london.

Extras that make mine tolerable as a dailey driver.

    - full electric seats
    - electrochromatic mirrors
    - cruise control
    - parking sensors
    - parking camera
    - navigation

Without those i wouldnt want to take it some of the places i have

2000 miles in 4 weeks and know i still made the rigt decision.

Hurracan will loose money over 12 months , ferrari will stay the same or go up.
If your more than 5ft 8 youll struggle with driving position and pedals on thr hurracan and the comfort seat is still not very confortable on long distance.

If you really want lambo , wait until you can afford a aventador spyder , as despite the awful gearbox, and the fact you couldnt really use it as a dailey driver , that v12 on full chat is a whole another level of epic.

But if you want a decent reliable supercar that sounds epic then buy the ferrari in the meantime ;)

Make sure you check insurance costs before you go ahead, particularly if you are mindful of a budget.
The policy for my F12 stipulates must be in a locked garage overnight if within 5 miles of the house.

@ Omegaelite, Many thanks for your post, i think after reading your post i will definitly be going for a 458 especially with the depreciation factor of the Huracan, The spider does cost around £25k more from the models i have been looking at but i can just imagine the sound of the engine with the top down on a summers day, also me and the wife fancy a trip to Tuscany in the car so that would definitely make the trip.

My wife has a Panamera and i also have access to my work vans so i can have regular use of them if any need to park in multi story car parks/risky areas.

My only main concern is will leaving a 458 outside uncovered then will i end up with unwanted corrosion or should it withstand the elements just like any other car? I only ask as many Ferrari owners sound scared to use the car in the rain let alone leave it outside in it.

I have also thought about the car cover idea but many people on here mentioned to not fit the cover if the car is wet or slightly dirty as it can damage the paint? half the time i honestly think i couldnt be bothered fitting it especially if its raining.

I read this thread and candidly not sure you're serious, but will toss my thoughts in

Generally speaking, all the current gen Ferraris are pretty good at just being "cars" - i.e. they won't melt in the rain, freeze over in the cold, etc etc.

However, there are a few realities that would lead me not to have a Ferrari (or Lambo) open to the weather...

First, the weather takes it toll on ANY car. In the case of a 458, the UV from sunlight will attack the interior. The car is essentially all aluminum, so little chance of rust, but aluminum can corrode. Remember the engine compartment is essentially open to the air with the vents. Some rain, no issue, but personally I wouldn't want endless cycles of cold/wet engine, hot steamy engine, back to cold/wet engine.

The elements also take their toll on finishes, so paint, wheels, etc.

Last, which you can judge, is the "risk" of leaving the car outside in terms of theft, vandalism, et al. They might not steal the car, but people have been known to pry the badges off.

If you plan on keeping the car forever, go for it. If you plan on selling it at some point, i'd speculate that many used buyers have high criteria for visual and cosmetic condition, and a car parked outside for a year in the UK will probably show it, which would drop the potential value on resale.

For me, no, I wouldn't leave a Ferrari outside 24/7/365. I would drive it almost every day, frankly my wife almost does. I'd find secure, covered parking and then consider it.

@Entropy - Thanks for your thoughts, and yes i am candidly serious.
I will probably go down the car cover route which Omegaelite recomended, they look nice quility and I also dont keep my cars long (im 30 years old and this will be my 32nd car) so fingers crossed i wont have it long enough for the weather to attack it (but long enough to enjoy it).

i see what you mean by the engine bay being exposed and can imagine the alloy becoming pitted from the hot and cold dampness which will more than likely happen.

    Thanks again for your thoughts.

For me, the simple answer is that it's a bad idea.

You state you can't actually afford to do this - hence you shouldn't,

Also, depreciation is one thing, but it will be much greater on a car that has been living outside. Many future buyers won't like this and that will drive the price down.

Can it be used daily? Sure. As Entropy said, it's a car,

While I do not live in the UK, I know people who do. From what I understand, it's not the easiest place to live with a Ferrari. I would not worry too much about theft - I would however worry about vandalism and things of that nature.

There's a big difference between parking the other cars you describe outside compared to a 458. They are more subtle, and in the eyes of many they are less "hated". Ferraris tends to make a lot of envious non-owners and philistines see red and act stupid.

When you can afford the car as car number two and a storage space, then it's time to do it. Then you can enjoy it as a weekend and holiday getaway car. The good thing about doing this is that it'll keep the car feeling fresh and special. Any car you drive daily, will lose some of it's initial emotional impact and appeal.

I personally wouldn't park a 458 on the street all the time in all weather. If you can't arrange a garage nearby, I'd wait. Just doesn't seem to make sense. The car's most likely going to get nicked, vandalized and otherwise messed up to some degree. Why put yourself through that?

Bro , if you can afford the car you can afford to rent a garaged space. That's what I do because I live in a high rise. Best - Kirk.

Besides the weather, damp. Manchester is not known for sunny sky's year around. People will 'key' the car with any and everything. I am sure garage space is available. Expensive, of course. My insurance requires a locked space. I must have the only key. Fire suppression and cameras 24/7. Pays off. My annual insurance cost is six thousand dollars for thirty cars.

Hi! I have owned a 2013 458 spider for 1 year, daily drive it (10,000 miles) and have not had a garage.

A few key points and opinions of mine from this experience.

I live in a desert climate (Las Vegas) so do not have rain, cold, ice, corrosion issues to deal with.

I only have to deal with extreme heat and wind at times but do not drive car much in afternoons in the summer because air conditioning sucks on 458 for desert climate and has nothing to do with having a garage. My 911 has way better a/c.

I live on a tucked away side street, have a gated entrance to my house, and the car is parked in a perfect entry way between 2 houses that I own and car is not visible to anyone passing by.

I use a car cover daily and the biggest tip I can give you there is.........

We have windy days and I have been through a few car covers trying to figure out what is fastest and works best.

Because of our wind at times, they will all blow off or up without having front and rear strappped which is relatively easy.

The problem is the wind will catch up the middle and it is a pain in the --- to go under car to put wire underneath every time so I just put a piece of bottom under door and close on both sides and that works easier.

Most inexpensive aftermarket car covers will work fine.

I would not use just a car cover if my car was exposed to passerby's in any way but that is just me.

I do not use the cover in any way anywhere but home.

    Conclusion.........

With all that being said, I am having a 3 car garage built shortly. :)

    My cars:

    2013 Ferrari 458 Spider

    2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet

    ........Only 2 worth mentioning.

In terms of leaving cars outside, my new bentley has sat outside for a year. With 21,000 in that year. Im currently having it upgraded but as part of the conversion they have charged me for mopping and detailing. £1800 mind you, but the outside looks as good as new now, i cant see any imperfections in the paint now. So any good detailer will be able to deoxidise the paint and bring it back to new. Im also having 3m film fitted to the entire 458 next week which will not only protect it from stones bit also the outside elements. Which may be another option

Hi, I live in London and park on the street. I have had a California and a 458. There are no garages nearby that are available to rent, and so it is a question of having a Ferrari and accepting the risk, or driving something else. I don't like the second option so I have to take a view.

Sure there is always the chance of vandalism, but that is the risk you take when you park at the shops, a restaurant, a hotel etc.

I think theft is less likely - car thieves in London tend to target BMW's, Mercedes and Range Rovers which have inadequate security systems that they understand.

Unfortunately it is a fact of life that if you live in a major European city, you may not be able to get access to a garage. For some, that may mean they won't have their dream car, and I fully understand that. But for me, I enjoy Ferraris so much, it is worth the risk.

As for the weather I have found Ferrari paintwork very resilient and there have been zero issue selling or part-exchanging.

I have a new 488 on order, and whilst I am not entirely happy about parking it outside, I can't wait for it to arrive!

There is a simple equation to address. Will you worry more than you will enjoy?

Although, there is a price to be paid for everything (literally "no free rides"). always think worst case.

Overall, the car itself is not the issue. A car, can be properly maintained, covered, protected (within reason) and survive quite well. It is YOU that needs to worry about YOU. Best

@ RobertP - Many thanks for your positive thoughts, Just what i wanted to hear. I do have access to my parents garage a couple of miles away but i know i will never use it, My allocated space is on a private dead end road so doesn't sound as vulnerable as where you park your car. Do you use a car cover?

@Omegaelite +1 - The clear 3m film is an excellent idea, I plan on getting the roof vinyl wrapped black if i cannot get one with a factory nero roof so could just get the whole car wrapped in clear vinyl while it is in.

IMHO...watching a 458 suffer in the elements will bother me. I lived and worked in London. I know the English weather. Your paint finish will suffer and not the least being dirty all the time. There are other Ferrari specifics to be considered, i.e., how are you going to charge the battery if you don't drive the 458 enough? The 458 battery will go dead in cold weather within a few days. Insurance may be a big issue if not garaged. Theft? Vandalism? etc...

Ferrari's are impractical to own and that's why one has to be 'ready' to own one.

@RBK - Thanks for your advice, I doubt i will worry more than i will enjoy, just taking precaution before i go for the crunch. Main thing im worried about is the weathering as many Ferrari users just seem to polish and make love to them in there garages, This made me think they are delicate.

The main thing I want a special car that can be used everyday (if needed) and wont leave me stranded on the hard shoulder of the motorway, and this is why my choice has been narrowed down to a 458 or Huracan.

I have enough worry parking at a premier inn with my 430- the insurance co will cover it but it is considered as an infrequent event. At home it has to be in a locked garage by 11 pm. Good luck finding an insurer to cover being left outside..
