Ok guys I know this is a Ferrari Chat room, but an opportunity quickly arose. Besides Ferraris (expensive after a divorce) another exotic that I always loved was the Pantera (not stock - need the group 4 flairs). One from local area popped up on Ebay. I already talked to owner twice and plan to contact his mechanic from Wisc. Is there any of you guys very knowlegible on the Panteras that could give me some advice or willing to go check out the car with me. It's up in Gurnee. HELP!

    Is it original?

Is this a replica of some sort this guy put together. I believe they were sold through Ford dealers with a stock 351. It's a great looking car either way!

    What is this guy asking?

    Thanks!

Check it out on EBay, it's a Group 4 flaired car. I'ts been in one family for 30 years. Son wants to move on to a new toy. He would like to keep it sold locally if possible. Maybe $42k, hoping to see car Friday around 12 noon up by Gurnee. I talked to mech who helps maintain it and says it a good deal. He's known the family for years. I do have some knowledge on this beast but was wondering if anyone out there locally are far more familar with checking it out. I did put a call into a Ford friend to see what connections he might have. Trouble is short notice, another supposed buyer is interested. I usually can't jump on fast deals even if supposedily good ones.

Would be a very cool car to have.

My fav magazine "Octane" had a recent article about the mid engine (mid size) supercars of the seventies: Lambo, Lotus, Ferrari 308, Maserati and Pantera.

It was very interesting to see how different each car was in different aspects.

Thanks I already talked to Cory this morning and he was very familar with the history of the car and family. We talked for about 45 minutes which was cool of Cory to do so. I have an appointment to go see it at noon on Friday. I guess all I can do is hope for the best and if I get it then I really need to find storage for the winter.

    I too dig the pantera.
The May 2004 issue of Classic Motorsports has a buyers guide (i have it if you want a copy - working all nite tonight, then to O'hare for a weekend in Colorado). If you want me to fax you a copy, PM me.

My (shallow) impression is that panteras are like 308s. Lots of rats out there, gotta find a good one.

2004 Concorso had LOADS of 'em! Yes, a Mangusta in the foreground.
BTW, while this is a Ferrari forum, chat away about other great cars!

The cruise on LSD with the American Irons (not the FOC event) had exactly one Pantera. It was a beautiful car and really interesting being part of both worlds (American Iron and Italian Stallion). You get the Italian beauty with the bullet proof American drivetrain. Oh wait, you already have that...

    Hi Rick,
I've had mine since '85 and have put about 100,000 miles on mine.
Of all my cars, this is the one I'll be buried in.
Look the car over for rust; front valence, side rockers, around front windshield
and rear unibody in engine bay down where it meets just ahead of the axles(they can separate there due to corrosion).
The only really expensive part on the car is the ZF transaxle
but fortunately these are pretty bullet proof.
Check this site for more info: http://www.panteraplace.com/
Go up on the Detomaso mailing list.
Chances are one of us will know the car.

Thanks folks, yes there always was a soft spot in my heart for the Pantera. I've been to their national meet once in Reno and always spend time in Monterey to inspect all the Pantera and to take lots of pics and videos. I kick myself for not buying a group four from Cory a number of years ago, I was one day to slow. I'm real partial to the group four versions, (non stock! you know me) just ceck out one of the first framed posters that I have haninging up in the family room - a group four version. Spike 208, I'll PM you with my fax #, would love to see the article. Chelle, thanks on the offer, I might take you up on it, I lost my spot for my current toy so I do need at least one sapce this year. Please PM kme with details.

Hey,Rick. I was also looking at a couple of Pantera's a few Months ago. I found a really nice one out in Cal. for $40K. It was all sorted out and in Mint Condition. And,2 other ones that were decent, drivable, but alittle bit "in Need",but not alot, for $20K,and $23K respectively. (But,I B.S'd too long and they both Sold....) So,I hope that helps you.

For $42K.,which is high side for Pantera's,that car better be absolutely Mint. And have all upgrades like Cooling System,Etc....Good Luck!!!...:)

BTW....Here are 2 sites that you can check out regarding Pantera's.

www.poca.com Pantera Owners Club of America

www.pim.net P.I. Motorsports in Orange,CA. They sell Performance Parts for Pantera's. Take a look at what they have....Unbelievable!

Thats what is so cool about those Cars. Italian Body. But,American Engine. No "Rubber Bands",Very Easy to Work on,Build Up,Maintain,Etc....with Parts from your neighborhood Auto Parts Store or Speed Shop. What could be a better scenario???

When I had the Corvette,it looked pretty low. Then, when I got the 308 and had them parked side by side in my garage. The 308 looked about 6+" lower. Then, last Summer,I was at the Downers Grove Cruise Night one Evening, and an older guy pulled up in a Red Pantera right next to my 308. And,the Pantera looked about 6" Lower than the 308! So,it is a Very Low car.

Well hang on a sec, I have to change my pants. I just came back from inspecting and better yet driving that beast and I do mean beast. It is a very clean and well maintained car from what I can tell from my limited inspection.
it's not concours grade but I think with very little I could get it up there. They have maintained it. Only 18k miles, alum radiator, steel flairsand some minor other exterior upgrades, does have some nicks but its driven and not a trailer queen, upgraded leather interior with the burled wood trim. More head room than I remember, new six point racing harness. A strong new 351 Cleveland with 10.5-1. New cluthc and rearend was totally inspected and updated. Racing brakes and newer suspension. I asked if he could give me a day to think on it. Just a little bad timing financially right now, just started getting off my feet, would be perfect if sold next spring but that's how it goes. Well someone can kick me on Sunday for either buying it or letting it slip through my fingers, but I got to at least drive that beast. The owner stated that they were going to do a spread on the car for Pantera International, would be a rush if my name was on the title then.

Well Frank I guess I'll have to look for another. I could only go up to $40k and now another guy jumped it $5k more. However at least I took a chance, and at least drove it. Guess I'll just have to lcontinue to look at the framed picture of that model that hangs on my wall. However, if the other guy backs out we still might have a deal, he would love to keep it here in the Midwest. Chelle, i still might be interested in your storage for the other toy. Thanks for the feedback team!

sorry for the slow replies all still very busy here and not a lot of computer playtime.

You guys are trying to get me into more trouble aren't you? I've seen these at PB and Meadowbrook. Usually in the $60-80k range. Well I was going to see one of my nieces who recently moved to Springfield and Peoria is an old haunt of mine, went to college there. Really nice but again another "FAKE" I'll have to ask Bill if I can get permission to even look at it since it is an imposter. But one hell of one and American iron power plant, Hot Dog time! No I think I'll finally land up putting my imitation dash and console in this Spring, to make mine look even more like an imposter so will need to pull it out of storage and see what small vents, instruments I need to dig up to complete it. Chelle said she would help me wire it up.

I think the GT40 replicas I have seen are awesome and show a lot of quality to work and detail, at least from a looks perspective. I haven't seen many but ones at local car shows and one here or there at a museum or auction have not been too much of an eye or ear sore. But its the same thing about Bill's argument, its a fake and the effort can be spent elsewhere. I think the Ford GT, with all its technical quirks, would be a much better car to drive considering the origin. Personally I think it is awesome that the original is a tribute to the winning car. What fuels my props to the tie being more pure is that if you didn't know that during the GT's promotional tour the black #2 car driven by McLaren was displayed along side of it? During the development of the new car they talked to high end collectors of the old car about characteristics they would liked to be adapted the new. I'd always go for the original source, money allowing. If not, go through the real deal again and have the latest. For example, if I can't afford 512M get a 512BB. Having the car endorsed by the manufacturer instead of some guy named Joe through Pep Boys is definitely like having gold in one hand and a used chocolate wrapper in the same. While the later might be sweet and one may find an interesting way to spin something off of it, it's still not gold.

    RocketBoy

PS: Silicon Valley has a second glance type of low milage Daytona Spyder in a gold color. I wonder how that shade would fair year round. Anyone been to Vegas lately? Was the Daytona at Imperial Palace an original Spyder?
