Palawan books

They always issue a brochure for a new title. I guess it will not be different this time.

 

The brochure is only £40 but it’s limited al5hough the leather version is only £90 ………joking.

 

I didn't know that they do a brochure on each new book. I just know the Ferrari in Camera brochure (because I have one ). Would be nice to see the other brochures.

I think you should at least buy the standard Ferrari in Camera edition to add to your collection of Palawan books.

Two new releases this year, “Aston Martin The Prototypes” and “Racing Though The Seventies”, also a third title in planning that will cover a brand with very little exposure bookwise.

 

“Racing Through Europe,” I believe, if the David Tremayne book.

 

To be precise: Aston Martin Project GT Racing Cars, and Seventies Motor Racing.

 

I emailed them a while back to ask for updates on the Aston Project cars book.
Hopefully hear something soon.

 

No. 839 (blue standard edition) is for auction at the moment at Marcel Seidel Ladenburg. Lot #720. Starts at 1,000 euros.

 

Cheap at that price if in good condition.

I was not aware the Aston GT project cars was announced so long ago - it's now planned for the end of 2024 / beginning of 2025 (and available to order):

There are still some DB4 GT additional copies, but at £ 2,000 I just can't consider it.

 

Many years ago I once saw the stock of unsold books when the production numbers were higher. Scary when you consider the retail price. You have to commend him for commissioning super-high-quality books on interesting subjects. The reality in 2024 is that unless the subject has some additional information that can be useful for car sales - numbers, numbers built, chassis histories, colours etc - it's a hard ask to sell many 100s of 'picture books' for £100s however beautifully produced.

I speak as someone who only bought the DB3S book in recent years and also have the Racing Through Europe book. I have put my name down for a Project Cars book.

 

I think the evolution of printing techniques now allows to adjust the production to the expected demand; some years ago it was almost the same cost to print 1000 or 200 copies.

 

On the 'Project Cars' book: the print run is minimal, the quality is expected to be very high (even the standard edition will be hand-bound), and there is hardly any other decent publication on the subject. It may take some time but these books will sell out, at which point Horton's will offer them with a ridiculous markup.

 

There is a fair bit on the Project Cars in various books incuding Horsman's, Wyer's various ones with Chris Nixon, Ted Cutting's talks and older editions of the AMOC magazines when edited professionally by Brian Joscelyne. This will bring them all together with new info and great photos and repro. Peter Sutcliffe has been interviewed and he is the only survivor who drove one in period. There are one or two race mecahnics still with us such as Laurie Bray. The publisher owns one of the three surviving cars. I think the Lola T70 Aston is in there too so I'm sure David Hobbs has been interviewed. Bray also worked on that.

Proper author David Tremayne will keep it on track historically, working in the role and impact of other cars such as GTOs which is often got wrong by marque specialist, non-professional writers.

 

There are easy ways to lose time , I just checked what numbers I got on my Palawan books ... my "seventies motor racing" is #83 of 1,000, and my "the Aston Martin V8 1969-2000" is #266 of 300. The "Aston Martin V8 register 1969-2000" is not numbered.

 

This is one of my favorite pictures of Phil Hill…so typically unselfconscious, properly turned out, down to the polished shoes, showing his typical empathy for the machinery and those who look after it. What isn’t typical…..as far as I can recall this is the only picture I’ve seem with him and a cigarette.

Very true! Phil was known for being nervous at times and, possibly as a result, smoked for a while. It was definitely not something he liked to be reminded of in later years...
