I'd like to here from those who have painted the black trim on the bumpers/rockers to body color. Are you happy with the change or wish you had left it stock?

When I first bought my Mondial last fall I thought I'd make this change for sure - but I'm not certain any more.

One area I am most uncertain about is the rear bumper - it has been hard to find photos that show how it would look if all trip is body colored vs leaving the grill the spans the width of the car at exhaust tip level black.

Pininfarina must have had his reasons for the black trim - but I do like the look from the side with the rockers painted to match.

By the way, my car is rosso corsa (red). Thoughts? Pros & Cons?

Do it I think it looks better never mind how it came from the factory. I think it gives it a more modern look . 348 came the same way and many paint theirs .

Yes, I have seen some real nice Mondis with painted mirrors, bumpers, rockers, and lip spoilers. Depending how its done, it does look good, especially with updated wheels. I think its a matter of preference and how some owners just want to keep their car as original as possible. You and only you can make that decision, but my $.02 opinion, I think it looks good when done right on the t & 3.2, not so much on the 8 or QV as these photos show. I love my car as I bought it and would not get it painted, but if I were on the market and found one that was painted to match and looked good all around, I would not hesitate. BTW, the guys with Black Mondi's are ahead of the game ;~)

I also use to think they were nicer with the color matched bumbers. But when I see a nice car with nice choice of aftermarket wheels my opinion is different. A real nice set of wheels is first thing to do IMO. With the scuderia shields.

The stock look of the older cars looks better and better to me all the time. There really was only a brief moment in time with black plastic bumpers on cars, wasn't it late 70's to early 80's. If someone is into vintage cars I say the black bumper look is a good one. Painting does modernize it into the late 80's early 90's. Still an old car.

I just finished the front of my car in red. I'm getting ready to do the back bumper and side skirts. I'm not going to do the lower grill piece in the center. I really line the change. My complaint about the black bumper was that it was too dull, and took away from the brightness of the car. The belt line of the Mondial kind of makes it look better as body color.

It's really easy to take off and paint the front. Do some prep on the bumper before priming and painting. If you look for my name in this sub forum, you can find my thread.

    I agree... they're aging nicely!

Here's an example in the 84 Mondial Charity thread:

Hi Doc, do you have pics you can share ?
Fair warning: You will prob get a 50/50 reaction, its not for everyone, but like I've said before, depending how its done, can look very nice and gives an old car a fresh updated look. example: Eberlein t coupe -awesome looking

It does not look bad, all are kind of cool looking in their own way, but Doc, if I'm honest, I think the Mondial 8/qv models kind of lends itself to being left original as the best option. I think because of the more narrow front, the black bumper looks cleaner on the red then red/red. The 3.2 & t models have a wider frontend, therefore making it blend better on all red. Again, matter of preference, just like some folks like 348/355/360 wheels on Mondials!

Other wheels on the early Mondials are a matter of practicality. No one wants to find or buy TRX tires except for the originality perfectionists.

If red bumpers are not for you, it's fine. Mine were always faded, and wouldn't scuff cleanly. They always looked dull and had oxidation deposits on them. I could have painted them back with flat black, but my choice was bright red. I'm happy with it. I wish I could do the back right away, but I have another car to finish before doing the rear. I may even do the rear view mirrors in red as they are also scuffed up from road debris.
