Hello Group To ensure the car I am about to purchase had not been hit....I asked for paint meter readings. Now that I have them, I don't know how to interpret them. Any help is appreciated. Doug Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have a meter and can tell you you're looking for consistency in the readings. For example, 7 is considered average on a car. Some car paints are thicker than others, though. Your readings are consistent with no paint work. If you had a 12 on the front fender and 7's everywhere else, it is likely there was paint on the 12. It does not appear there has been any paint on your car based on the readings. Good news. Unfortunately the meter does not work on plastic or fiberglass, only on steel and aluminum. So you'll have no readings on the bumpers. No biggie. It's the metal you're concerned about.
I'm assuming this is an 06 430 with 543 miles. Wouldn't guess any paint work. Also Ferrari has a different process of painting cars that will give less consistent readings.. watch the Ferrari 599 special on nat. geographic channel and you will understand. Top of the fender will read different then the side etc. A GM/Ford (mass produced/lower quality) car will read 5.0 all over sides a little more then the top(roof, hood). Is FOA selling this car or is this a ppi?? If FOA is selling it they will guarantee it.. I'm in BG, KY and I have a paint meter. I will come down and "TEST DRIVE IT" and check the paint work for you anytime Seriously, I doubt this car has been in any trouble. ATL reports wrecks to carfax, so you would see it unless someone ran in a ditch and didn't tell.. Go for it.. BTW, the headlight in the diagram should not have paint work.
My car had a couple inconsistent readings. However, the car comes with a book that has pictures of it on the assembly line. In one picture, you could see the primer added in the same spots we got the thick readings. I am talking about inconsistent across the panel though. Yours just has the readings per panel.
