    Hey guys,

Yesterday I accidentally overfilled my gas tank and had gas spilling over the side of the car for the first time ever. Ugghhh!!! I was topping it off for a long sleep over the winter. Anyway, I drove home and started hosing it off within 20 minutes of it overfilling. I also hosed off the area around the gas filler cap. While I was doing that, I swear I heard a gurgle coming from the gas tank. The cap was screwed on tight. Could any water have somehow been forced into the gas tank? I hope not! :-O !!! Sometimes the car gurgles a bit after a run so maybe that was it but I'd like to hear from any of you that know how the gas filler connects to the tank. Again, the cap was screwed on tightly. I ran it for about 5 minutes after that and it was fine. If any water did get into the tank, I'm hoping the very full tank of fuel will keep the car safe over the winter.

Second question...what do you guys do to keep your paint in great shape? Mine is still very nice and original but eventhough I wash and dry my car with micro fibre cloths, I see light surface scratches in my paint. What do you guys use to wash and dry your cars and what kind of polish or wax do you put on your cars? I'm wondering if I should put anything on my car where the gas overflowed just to protect the finish.

    Thanks! :)

    Paul,
I would be careful about filling the car so full that there is fuel in the fillup tube. It is all connected together by rubber hose and I don't trust it! I fill mine full--but not too full--for the winter and put a little fuel stablizer in the tank. I haven't had any issues.

Sorry I can't answer the other questions....seems rather unlikely that you got water in the fuel....start the car and see what happens!

I, too, doubt that any water got "in" via gravity -- both US and Standard/Euro versions are well-designed in this area (although they are different designs). Some gurgling/squeaking/moaning from the fuel storage system is quasi-normal on a sealed US version; however, it would be rather unusual on an unsealed standard/euro version -- although, if you filled it high enough to get some liquid fuel up into the usually non-wetted hoses, this might exacerbate such noises on either version (there should be no liquid fuel in the 16~19 mm line that connects the top of the tanks so the maximum fill level should be the top surface of the tanks) -- which version 308QV do you have, and, if US, is the fuel evaporation control system unmolested/unmodified?

I have an '85 US QV. I doubt the fuel lines were modified. My car still has the original paint even. I just drove it for about 45 minutes and burned off a quarter tank so I won't have to worry about fuel sitting in the fuel filler hose over the winter. I sure am going to miss driving it. I love my car! Is that okay to say here in this forum? ;-)

    Paul,
Your QV has a rubber tube that drains the area aroung the gas cap. The gurgling you heard was almost certainly from water going down the tube.

I doubt water could enter the tank if the gas cap was on snugly. The caps have gaskets and the tanks/lines should be liquid tight so that in the event of a roll over or parking on an extream grade gas does not come out.
