Is it possible to get the original paint color of a car if you know the VIN? Is there a registry of that references VIN to original color?

I have a '79 308 that I suspect was repainted from Rosso to Black but I am not sure. I actually like the black and am just trying to piece together the history of the car. I am, I think the third maybe fourth owner.

    Hi, Jr., welcome to FerrariChat...

A Ferrari VIN tells us many things (original country for which the car was manufactured, right- or left-hand drive, engine type, passive restraint systems, etc.), but they do not tell us the original color of a car.

However, if your 308 was built in 1979, odds are it has a five-digit serial number and not a 17-digit vehicle identification number.

You can contact Ferrari through the owner's site to obtain a certificate of authenticity, which tell you the car's original livery, engine number, etc. There are s handful of groups and individuals around the world that run independent Ferrari databases. I maintain a modest database and would be happy to check your car's serial number against any information I may have on it, in the hopes of determining your car's original colors. Let me know the serial number and I'll tell you what I have.

You are correct, there is no "real" vin. The last five digits are 30585. The entire number is "F106AS30585" as read from the stamp on the frame on the right side of the engine bay.

I will follow up with Ferrari and also welcome any help.

PT 328, I checked the driver's side door, no paint code there. I also checked the engine bay but could not find anything that looked like a paint code.

I guess I will have to wait on Ferrari. Thanks.

I went and checked mine. The paint code sticker, on my car, is located on the underside of the rear engine lid where your right hand is placed when lifting up the engine lid, not in the engine bay itself. As you stated, and NNO noted, verification can be obtained from the Ferrari owner's website.

The 'F106AS' that precedes the serial number is the chassis type of your 308 GTS, most likely built in December, 1979. It came from the factory in black with a red interior. I'd be interested in any details you're comfortable providing (when and from you acquired it, from a dealer or private seller, mileage at the time of acquisition, current mileage, etc.) so that I may keep my database current. I know that this car was for sale at least twice, once in 1980, then again in 1983 (with 14,000 miles).

This is a very late 308 GTS.

    Thanks again for everyone's assistance!

The plaque on the engine lid has the number 599-1-619 embossed on it. This does not appear to match the Dino colors from the link? It was painted by Salchi as indicated on the plaque.

    NNO, from what I know
    - The car was sold on 9/15/1982, from a dealer (Spot Cars of Birmingham) to a company (Ionia Big Boy, Inc.) No notes on mileage.
    - The car was sold on 4/29/1983, from a dealer (The Sports Care Exchange) to an individual. No notes on mileage.
    - The car was sold again (date unknown) to an individual prior to or around 1985.
------ All of the above were in Michigan
    - The car was sold to an individual in Dayton, OH in 1998. Mileage: 26,000 plus/minus
    - The car was sold on 4/26/2011 to me (Boston, MA). Mileage: 27,324

Please let me know if there is additional information that I can provide.

I am curious about the painting process. There are a couple of places where I have noticed Red paint under the black. This is true under the front end where something has scrapped against the underbelly of the car and scuffed off some of the black. In addition, I noticed Red paint in the right rear wheel well when I removed the fender liner. Were the cars primed in red?

I know of another 308 nearby that has a different paint number from the usual codes used by Salchi. There are other threads on F-Chat about colour codes (but mostly about the newer ones).

On my 1978 steel 308 GTB the front and rear spoilers/valances are 'plastic' and they are orange/red. I think the US versions had steel spoilers though? Maybe BigTex can help here.

IIRC both front and rear valences are fiberglass on US cars too. Although I'm not 100% sure.

bigodino, the plastic would explain the orange/red color. I am not sure why I did not pick up on this other than I was really not thinking about it too hard.

Well my '79 US 308 has fiberglass, I am not sure about other years.
