Has anyone used this product? http://www.powerenhancer.co.uk/product.php/2/bg-44k--for-petrol-/c98bb88681eb0c738d80b2544abb13cb My 328 engine is about to turn 80.000Km and this might be a good time to clean up .... Opinions?
I use to use it all the time twenty years ago when I owned my shop near BG Products in Charlotte, North Carolina USA. Sold quite a bit of it to folks with cruddy K-Jetronic systems (mostly VW/Audi and a few 308/328/Mondial/TR's). It worked extremely well for BMW 320i's that were prone to "buildup" on the back of the intake valves that badly affected idle quality and off throttle drivability. It was a good "topical" fix and idle quality was improved. Never saw any downside but began to remove injectors and use my Bosch Tester to clean and verify patterns. I think it's one of the few additives that works and it sounds ideal for a high-mileage 308/328.
I use it as a preventive and not as a preformance enhancer. I usually drive out completely w/in 1 to 2 days.
Thank you for your replies. I'm surprised there were so few ... Anyway since I've found no bad reviews anywhere, I've decided to give it a try and already ordered a can for gasoline and another for diesel. My daily driver has turned 180.000 Km and I'll give a try, too. I will let you know the results !
If you have the original steel fuel injectors, it would be worth it to simply replace them all with the currently production brass ones. I think new are around $30 each or so. I did mine a few years ago when they were about $22 each, made a noticeable difference above 5k rpm. My tech said that two or three of my injectors had very poor patterns.
I have replaced injectors, plugs and wires about 4.000Km ago, and they've made a difference both at idle (smoother) and at high rpm's I've removed the plugs to check how things were and I can see some carbon buid up at the top of the pistons. It made me look for a cleaner ...
It was recommended not to let it hang about. Start with at least half a tank of gas (do they specify an amount to mix a can with?) and run it aggressively through in a day or two. It is pretty serious stuff.
I've put 2 cans through my current car. It seems to be helping...and you remind me it's time for another...
This is interesting. It's usually hard to get first hand experience with products like these. Also, i'm always weary of buying snake oil in a can. Nice to see that people actually have had good experiance with it. Darrell.
The Seafoam brand works really well too. Theres a process I have done many times on my other cars and it saved me from a $4000k sticky valve fix on my land rover. Basically you unplug a vacuum hose from the intake manifold or valve covers of the car. Get a funnel with a small end on it and stick into the vacuum hose. While engine is running you slowly pour the stuff into the engine without allowing it to stall. Once the whole can is in you plug it up and turn the car off. Come back about an hour later and start the car up. It will smoke like the dickens which is all of the carbon buildup being burned off. You repeat the whole process until the car doesn't smoke any longer. I did this on my 03 disco rover, my 86 4runner, and my 01 ford f150 with great results. There is also a service you can get at some BF Goodrich shops called a Motorvac Carbon clean which does the same thing but with computerized machines but costs about 150 bucks. Never tried it on the ferrari.
I have tested Sea Foam and it will not harm the O-rings in the Fuel Distributor. You should buy 2 common black O-rings at the hardware store put 1 in a jar with the BG 44 and leave 1 out, compare them after a few hours. I do not reccomend additives with lots of methanol or ethanol because they absorb water and this will cause fuel system corrosion to aluminum. Larry Fletcher CIS Flow Tech Llc
Larry, I won't try this with grandkids around during the holidays..yes they wanna see 'the red head'.. so may I guess BG 'eats' the 'o' rings....? One thing I do use is sta bil...any downside with that? Mike
wooppss... I've used my can of BG44 this morning! But according to the can contents there is no methanol or ethanol, unless I'm missing something: EC 232-489-3 stoddard solvent, EC 265149-8 distillates (petroleum) , hudrotreated light R 65, R10, S23, S24, S60, S62 I did about 130Km, so I guess it is still too soon to feel any difference. Would you recommend quickly ending this tank of fuel ?
I use a long nozzle on a bottle to fill each of my clylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil. I put an ounce or two in then turn the car over for a second to spread it up and down the walls then put another ounce or so in and let it sit overnight. One cylinder at a time. Haven't used a boroscope but just a penlight and can tell a difference in how clean the top of the piston looks. Never used the BG44k product before.
I once used the BG product on an engine that was badly sludged. Made so much smoke it scared the heck out of me - had to go driving on some deserted roads late at night to burn it off - anything else would have been begging for an arrest.
BTW, another product I have had recommended to me by three techs now, is Lubro Moly Ventil Sauber. It too, is designed to clean combustion chambers, and intake valves. Cleans the entire fuel system. I use it preventively on my 355 and my BMW 540. About every 3k miles or so I will run a can through.
