    Hello,

My 550 is an import from Hong Kong and as such the mileage is in KM. In the UK, the motor authority have asked I have the speedometer displaying MPH so they can legalise the car.

A workshop have offered to do it for me but have clearly said they have not opened a 550 speedo before.

I've tried to search but with no clear answer.

Has anyone opened up their dash before on the 550 and how difficult is it to get to the speedo for this job?

Thank you for any help. :)

Is that a new requirement? Never had to do that in the UK when I lived there with a Euro 308 GTS. FAI in the States (CA) can easily do that job, but a lot of shipping involved. Are you going to want to change the odometer, too, because otherwise the mileage will add up too quickly?

Some countries and /or some officials are OK with a conversion table stuck next to the speedo. It can very much depend on who you meet in the process.

In my country it is OK to have a GPS on your window or stuck over the original speedo at the yearly inspection if your speedo is inoperative. They will record the mileage on the odo and even put in the units (miles/ or km) shown on the original speedo - yet only the speed indication is the true requirement.
Not sure about what the criteria are when importing here, let alone the UK though!
Still if I were you I would put serious efforts into leaving the car as original as possible, to avoid any suspicion/confusion about mileage later on. A simple temporary stick-on battery powered GPS might do that trick to let it pass through the process in its original form.

I had thought the same regards GPS.

Unfortunately, the VOSA (motoring authority) called me today to say they need to inspect the car and that the dash should be in mph not kmh so I'm slightly confused what the others have done.

If the speedo was to be removed from the dash, is it a big job?

You may have been 'unlucky' to have been selected for inspection but perhaps unavoidable as your car has come 'from Asia'.

Do you have a Certificate of Conformity? That *might* help you in some way (but I'm not sure, as there is a fast-track procedure but that is really for cars under 10 yrs old at the time of import).

Try contacting "Harrykul" who posts on Pistonheads as he may have some practical advice to share. I believe that he imported a 550 from EU to Northern Ireland in 2015(?) and was obliged to have his speedo converted as he discovered that N.I. appears to have stricter rules in this area than the rest of mainland UK.

When you find your solution, please report back here!

It's relatively simple to do. You just need a new speedo face put onto the existing speedo. The easiest route is to get someone like mycarimport to do the whole job; it should cost about £200. Speak to Jack Charlesworth at Car Importers | Home | My Car Import

Does not fix the odometer. Not sure if that is in the instrument panel like the 575M or a different sender unit.

I had to do this when I imported my 575 HGTC from the Czech Republic to the UK.

UK cars have a kilometres subscale on the speedometer, but not vice versa. So you need to get a new speedometer face from a company called Lockwood who are in Leeds. We normally do all our own work, but I wasn't sure what was needed to remove the whole instrument binnacle, so I gave it to Peter Chambers in Tewkesbury – I was around but didn't see the actual work, but it was changed in a couple of hours.

You also have to change the dipped beam on the lights. Ferrari in the UK will be keen to sell you a complete headlight unit at about £5000, but all you need to do is to remove (from the back) the dipped-beam unit, and in the front of that is a metal plate, with the reverse of the actual dipped beam cutout in it. You simply turn it through 180° and then reassemble – not much more than an hour each side!

And you will instantly loose 37.86% of the car's value.

Thank you for the update guys. Unfortunately I've been tied up with family issues.

OK so after about a week of to and from with the motoring authority in the UK. I have been told that the car needs to run in MPH, so that would mean remove the speedo and attaching a MPH sender to the speedo. I am not technically gifted and this is what I have been told by someone who does this for a living.

Only thing is they have not pulled out a 550 speedo cluster before. Has anyone here done this?

We are not planning to sell the car at all so it would be OK to have the car fully legalised.

    Thank you.

This is absolutely wrong - read the threads & links above - the speedo must show mph hence the change of face only

What's wrong with the info in post 5 for disassembling dashboard ?
