Does GD = driver on right hand side of car (i.e., UK) or does GD = drive on right hand side of the road (i.e., US)

The term origin is from the Latin language. Long ago the phenomenon of light traveling through water and how it changes with different solutions was discovered. Light traveling through sugar water bends at a right angle (see Varying Index of Refraction Using Sugar Solution in Water)

Also from history for many years Left Handedness was considered sinister. At some point in history the two terms were adopted in the medical profession to discribe or identity the Left Eye as Oculus Sinister (OS) and the Right Eye as Oculus Dextra (Latin) or Ocular Dextrose. A third term comes to mind to complete the medical usage is OU which means both eyes (Oculus Uterque) which means both eyes. A more modern version is Ocular Universal.

So it all comes from Latin and our forefathers of science which started in Europe. Latin comes from, Latium, an area in central Italy and was the language of the Romans.

The Latin for left is: "sinistra", and originally that's all it meant: "left".

Over a period of time, the word became reinterpreted/corrupted to mean "Sinister" (as we know it today, to mean "evil" or "bad") - Mainly due to the fact that being Left handed was not deemed to be "normal" way back yonder and so left handed people were thought to have been touched by evil.

The Latin for right is: "dexter".

So basically, "Oculus Sinister" simply means: "Eye - left" (with no intended reference to anything evil, as "sinister" would imply today), and "Oculus Dextra" simply means: "Eye - right"
