Hi all, The oil temp gauge in my 1986 412 5 speed just recently got rebuilt (by Palo Alto Speedometer) and I’m noticing that the temp seems to be reading higher than I’d like it to - see pic below - at just under 120 deg. At the same time, the coolant temp was very slightly above 90 deg (smack in the middle of the coolant gauge) and all this was happening while in stop/go traffic with both A/Cs running and the outside temp in the high 80s F. When not in stop and go traffic, the oil temp hovers right at 100. Is this normal operation? What sort of oil temps do you guys see in your cars? Cheers, Ruben Image Unavailable, Please Login
On my car I used to "cook" IGOL heritage oil (did not last more than 400km!), so had to go for IGOL ceramic (full synthetic) in order to have an oil that can sustain the heat. So, yes the oil tends to get quite hot in these cars. Note than in any case oil has to raise above 100°C in order to boil any water accumulated in the system.
Here is my experience with my 400i: - stop and go - oil temp is low only about 90, water temp creeps up to 110. - steady highway speed - oil temp up to 110-115, water temp about 100 Any good synthetic oil will takes these temps. Water will evaporate far below 100 C. Check all three of your fans are running. Being one shy makes a difference. Ken
