I overfilled my engine oil reservoir by about one quart; the oil is beyond the "Max" on the dipstick. Even when the car is at operating temp, the reservoir is practically DRY so I am unable to remove the excess from the reservoir. The car runs fine with only a small amount of white smoke from both exhausts for 5-7 minutes after a cold start. Should I be concerned? Should I drain the excess via the drain plug?

After proper idling temperature is reached, the dipstick reads above the "Max" marking. This is what I recognize as overfill.

That sounds right. In which case I do not understand how the reservoir can be dry if there is oil in it above the max mark on the dipstick. Am I being dense?

Overfilling may cause some excess carryover into the intake manifold.

Contrary to wet sump systems, with our dry sump systems it's actually better to run a little underfilled than to run at the "normal" level or overfilled.

The oil level is checked with the engine running and warm. That's the only way to know if it is properly filled.

Not according to the OM, but either way gives about the same results.

It's been reported here that an extreme overfill could result in oil in the cylinders, with catastrophic consequences. I overfilled mine and sprung a leak in a cam seal - coincidence?

Anyway, I just opened the drain plug on the bottom of the engine (not running) and let some oil drain into a pan. I guessed the amount. But with 11 quarts to work with (12 in your case?) you have some room to guess. Also as stated above, running a little low is better than a little high. I follow the "check the oil level while the engine is warm and still running" advice.

Per your suggestions, I drained out a quart + and now the level on the dipstick is between MIN - MAX. Thanks to all who responded.

An easier, way less messy method I’ve found is to use something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Koehler-Enterprises-RA990-Multi-Use-Transfer/dp/B0181EDCZ6?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1

Just stick the suction end into the oil reservoir and pump out the exact amount needed. Easy, no guessing, and no spills!

(Note: also available from Harbor Freight for about the same price)

Funny, I actually bought that same pump from O'Reilly's after I did the drain trick. I needed it to pump in trans fluid.

Use a turkey baster to suck out over filled fluids
That’s what I do and it works great
