I have a oil pan which has a larger size plug than normal due to a prior owner having to retap. I would like to get the best seal possible. Should I use teflon tape near the bolt part of the thread and leave the end of the thread without tape so no tape will be introduced into the oil pan. OR should I not use teflon tape at all.

    Thanks

    Dave

Teflon tape is known to shred into small string like pieces when used to seal taper pipe threads. These have circulated in many systems and will clog small passages. I would not use it in an engine oil system

Loctite PST 592 is made for sealing threads & resists oil well. It's also designed so that the joint can be unscrewed w/o too much force.

Go to the link below, type PST into the search box to see tech.data sheets.
I've used PST 592 to seal the bolts that seal the cam gear into the cams. Those threads are under full oil pressure!

The permatex gasket maker ref'd below is an RTV. It will not help keep the plug in place.

These threads are not NPT and not intended to seal. Forget the tape & sealants. The copper crush washer is the seal. Make sure the washer is new & the mating surfaces clean - torque to spec.
