i recently bought my first Ferrari (a 458) The service rep at the dealer where I did the PPI (and also replacing a bad sensor) advised me to get an aftermarket charger instead of using the original Battery tender that came new with the car. What are your thoughts on this? If you agree with him, are there units or adapters that will allow me to use the Battery tender port, or do I need to take off a panel in the passenger footwell to hook up an after market charger?

    Sorry,
    Why do you say aftermarket?
The service rep just didn’t care for the OEM one, but my understanding after reading some other forum posts about this is that they are made by CTEK which seems to be popular among FChat users.

Image Unavailable, Please Login This was supplied with my 2018 and I've had no problems with it whatsoever. I believe it's a CTEK - 7 LEDs, which some on this forum have said is a better unit.

At the time I responded you didn’t mention what model car you had. The older OEM chargers are flaky and overpriced to replace, better options in the aftermarket.
The newer ones keep getting better. And OEM rarely source the best IMO. Even CTEK will have a range of quality in their products, like anyone else.
    Yours should be adequate.

When I bought my Cali 2.5 years so, it has the original battery and battery conditioner. Replaced both about 6 months in. Knock on wood, no weird messages on the TFT since then.

This is the conditioner I got.

Happy with it. Bought from Amazon.
You'll likely need to get the correct socket to fit your Ferrari's charger port.

This past summer I replaced my original battery and purchased this new charger: https://www.ebay.com/itm/192344911253

Re: '14 Cal 30. I failed to plug in my OEM charger for a few weeks, and the original battery would not take/hold a charge. I upgraded the battery and the charger.

Friend of mine with a 2103 458 had his OEM charger go bad; I lent him mine and the car was OK, proving it was the charger. He bought a CTEK/adapter, it is fine now. I still use my OEM charger but have CTEKs for the other cars

There are two major manufacturers of battery tenders. CTEK and Deltran. There are probably others, but those two are the most widely used. Both sell using their own brand names and with car/ motorcycle brand naming. As most know, Ferrari sources through CTEK as do many other car makers. Deltran tenders are used by Harley Davidson as well as other manufacturers.

There is no reason to not use a Ferrari tender. There is reason not to buy one from Ferrari and that is because you pay a severe Ferrari tax. Functionally, they all will work fine. There are some feature differences within a model line, but for the most part, get one that is rated for use on AGM batteries. I have a Deltran and working fine for going on five years now. I paid about $45 for it. Generally, comparing feature for feature, Deltran is less costly than CTEK ...a lot less than Ferrari branded tender.

I only use E genius chargers (always have them attached directly to the battery and run a pigtail out to connect. I also have a full sized battery charger (big heavy thing you roll around on wheels) and rotate out my batteries once a year (for a full recharge). I tend to do things to an extreme but when you have as many car as I have you need to have the best way to maintain a charge. Tenders tend to do only so much, I have tested this in the past and when a stock tender lights up green it does not always mean the battery is charged, in fact I have then taken the battery out and put it on my tester and it is only 50% charged. I am not saying you should do what I do (I'm not normal), but if possible attach the tender line directly to the battery.

Battery tenders are a sign of mental illness. A good illness, but still an illness.

I purchased the Ctek MXS 5.0 along with the Ferrari adapter from ebay, for my 2013 458.
It works great. The adapter unfortunately costs as much (or more) than the charger itself, but I think it's worth it because it easily plugs into the OEM socket. Plus it prevents you from forgetting it plugged in, and driving away. When plugged into the OEM socket, the car won't start.
I decided on the MXS 5.0 vs the higher one because the higher one didn't offer any function that would benefit me, and most importantly, I like how the 5.0 selects winter function mode automatically when the temperature drops. The other models (less expensive, and more expensive) need to be selected manually by the user.

I've used Deltran for more years than I care to remember. Used on both Lambo and Ferrari as well as my DD when I was out of country. The one failure I had was replaced by Deltran at no charge.
