I just picked up Palmers' ScanXL (PCMScan).

I tried connecting to the car this am and it came back with 'unable to connect to vehicle' error. I tried a MAC and Genisys(sp?) and got the same response. I wonder what the comm'n error is? The SW finds the I/F but not the car. Tried Ign on, Ign on/alarm deactivated, and car running.. no difference in results.

The recall is done that has OBD pin 4 tied into pin 5 for chassis ground.

I am not sure why it has failed a connection.. guess Ill have to make up a K-L-G patch cable to connect direct to the ecu factory SD2 connection, and try that.

I guess my immediate check is to confirm the pin 4-5 grd and 16-12v are active before resorting other measures.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated?

    thanks Jan

You must hit the KEY FOB to deactivate the alarm........Then you shoukd be able to get the scanner to read.

The other option is to actually start the car....

    done and done.. no success

..doesn't appear to be any power to the ELM unit.. I am going to check the ground at 4-5 and 12V at 16 tomorrow..

if 16 delivers 0V .. I wont be too impressed..

If this unit has a standard OBD-2 connector, plug it into another car and see if it works.

Not having 12V at the OBF connector will result in Communication Error. If there is a fuse that is burned out, and it controls the power to the OBD2 connector, you will be unable to communicate to the car.

That 12V is fused, somewhere. It is NOT straight from the battery. You should find out where the fuse is and check that.

There is a connector in the ecu behind the passengers seat. Take off the black panel you may see a cable the has been disconnected. Some sort of additional access port. Check that

on my 355, the engine must be running or the scanner won't connect.

EDIT: i see you tried it with the engine running. keep trying with it running, as that's the only way mine connects.

Okay, I see you had the recall performed and you have the key in "on" position, that is weird you are not getting it to function. I agree, double check that extra ground wire modification was done correctly to the OBDII port.

That makes sense.. the footwell fuses are all good.. ill see how the front set look later this evening. You would think that if a fuse is gone that other items would stop functioning.. and all seems well otherwise. Worth a check.. I wonder if there are other "hidden" fuses about?

I tested the ScanXL on another car last night and its working .. so the scanner is confirmed. When hooked up to the other car the ELM lights up like a xmas tree.. not so on the 355 OBD.

The SD connection I expect is what you mean.. If I cant get the OBD plug to work Ill make up a patch cable to hook up to that using remote 12v

OK .. update.. pulled all fuses, cleaned and reset them all.. hooked up the scanner and voila.. OBD I/F power was on!! I am not 100% what was causing the bad connection.. it could have even been the OBD pins themselves being a bit dirty.. who knows..

Anyhoo.. got the DTC recorded and got:

P0422 bank 1 (LHS?) cat below threshold
    P1551 unknown
    P1514 unknown

If anyone can shed light on the P1 codes that would be appreciated.

Ill check the LHS cat in the meantime. J

Just remove the cat, and you can check to see it's condition Joel. Very commonly the ceramic matrix/core will come loose from the housing and move around...you will see the outer edges of the core crumbling away...left that way long enough (ignoring the light) the core will break apart in chunks, and rattle around in the housing and end up in the muffler. Since you caught it early, it will probably still be in one piece, but starting to wear around the edges from working loose. The light trips, because too much of the exhaust flow is going around the matrix/core, rather than through it, which trips up the post cat O2 sensor to give you the "low catalyst efficiency" code. I have had this happen twice in the past few years...

Recently, I found a company that rebuilds the oem cat with a new metal matrix core for $600. The cut it open, secure the new core, and weld it back up. Remains stock in appearance. No CE lights. http://www.smithcat.com/

The only issue I had was they did not use ss weld rod, and they painted the housing silver. So remind them to use ss weld rod, and NOT to paint it. ;)

348's were not OBDII. All Ferraris from 1996 to mid 2005 have issues with the OBDII connector, see my post #9
