My eldest son is headed to UA in 6 weeks. In our 3 trips to the campus, including orientation, we've acquired quite the collection of UA gear. My 15 year old was wearing his BAMA shirt the other day walking into Target and someone yelled "ROLL TIDE!". He had no idea how to respond, and when he asked me I didn't know either. I know why they're the Crimson Tide and I know why the mascot is an elephant, but my suggestion of saying "thanks" in response to RT was met with a look only a 15 year old can give.
As a transplant from Florida living in Alabama going on 8 yrs now I still can't explain it either. All I know is you have a few choices. 1. Say it back (as expected) 2. Respond War Eagle (prepare for the drama) 3. Play dumb and stay out of the war. I thought I knew what a rivalry was till I got here.
You simply respond, "Roll Tide." Congrats to your son. He's made a great choice in UA. Let me know if I can ever be of assistance. I'm in Tuscaloosa all the time. Roll Tide! Mark (proud Bama grad, 1992) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTdXQyhjifY[/ame]
I think your son will like Tuscaloosa. Its a nice town, has a progressive mayor and the university and its infrastructure continue to expand. And having a domicile US senator, it gets its fair share of pork. If you or he needs a hand with anything let me know. Happy to help. God bless America, Nick Saben and the Crinsom Tide. Drew Tuscaloosa, AL
Hey, the man owns an F40 (which I once had the pleasure of getting a ride in). That ought to count for something!
Jim, welcome to you and your family to the SEC. As you can tell, there's a lot of butt hurt from our rivals in this thread based on having to play our football team. Most of it is good natured but there's also a lot of angst among SEC fans because the end of an amazing era of Alabama Football is no where in sight. But trust me, there's a lot more to The University of Alabama these days than just football or athletics. What Dr Witt has accomplished since arriving at The Capstone in 2003 is simply remarkable, maybe even more so than Coach Saban's turnaround of our Crimson Tide football team. No need to boast--I'm sure you did your research and came to the same conclusion. I served as the alumni chapter president in Memphis for three years recently, and sat on several scholarship boards with UA. I can tell you it's no easy task getting into Alabama these days. Your son is to be commended on his performance and choice in picking Bama. It's been over twenty years since I graduated and I truthfully envy him. I would go back and do it all again in a heartbeat. Tuscaloosa is almost certainly where I will retire to at the appropriate time. Again, Roll Tide and welcome! Mark
Saban for president, heck Pope! Roll Crimson Tide! Even though I am a terrible speller as you guys can see I don't believe I messed this up that bad. Thanks for being kind. But Jim, important thing, if you or your son needs some help in town, happy to lend a hand. Drew PS: There is a thread somewhere regarding what would you do to make FerrariChat better - guess I should request spell check.
I don't handle Alabama anymore, but I guess that shouldn't get in the way, should it? I'll stir something up.
If you are wearing Bama gear, your aught to say "Roll Tide". If you aren't going to represent, why wear it? So, don't wear it. Go Hoos!
