NTT Transport & Go 2 Transportation: Problems and Lessons Learned

Gents – I recently became a subscribing member of this forum after I purchased a great Ferrari 458 out of California about 2 months ago. After finishing the deal, I chose to use a transporter recommended by some forum guys, NTT Transport. This is in no way meant as an on-line rant about them, but rather I hope it to serve as useful information for folks who are considering shipping a car. I think the lessons learned will help folks should they have to deal with transport issues ever (I hope not).

The owner of NTT Transport arranged a very timely pickup of my car within 1 day. I was told car would stay on the same truck from California to Florida, and not be off loaded or swapped anywhere to another truck, as some companies do. I had to pay him in advance via bank wire to transport the car. Because the price seemed good, and they were recommended by some good guys here, I went with him.

Car arrived about at my house a week or two later, as promised. First thing of note, I contracted NTT Transport to transport car, but it arrived on a truck labeled Go 2 Transportation out of Arizona – not sure if an affiliated company, or NTT Transport sub-contracted shipping out – which he was not supposed to do. (**LESSON 1 – best to get this all in writing, which I did not). When car was off loaded, I immediately saw some big road rash on one front wheel and big chip on the other. Since I had the car inspected the day before pickup, and had photos, I knew it wasn’t there on pickup. The Go 2 Transportation Driver assured me it was present when they picked up car, and even gave me a copy of his pickup inspection report showing both wheels damaged. I asked him if it could have happened when car was off loaded to change trucks (baiting him as it wasn’t supposed to be), and he said it was only off loaded once in Arizona and they checked it there. Hmmmm. I had to sign for car as his inspection papers from pickup showed damage. I also already paid them. I figured I’d deal with it later. (** LESSON 2 – best to pay at pickup if at all possible)

I called seller and inspector, both of whom assured me no damage at all was there. Fortunately, seller kept his copy of the pickup inspection report (** LESSON 3 – make sure seller keeps this for you). This was critical, because his paperwork was different – it did not show any damage to wheels. Somehow, trucking company must have changed paperwork and forged it. After speaking to seller, he also said he was actually so concerned with how driver was loading truck (at sharp angle), he actually took photos of him loading it because he thought something could happen to wheels. He saved them too (VERY HELPFUL).

I immediately contacted owner of NTT Transport and described the story. I had already got a quick price to replace the 2 wheels from the aftermarket company that made them. I was in hind sight probably too kind - I said in effect that I know sh-t happens - just pay me for the 2 wheels and I’ll handle mounting and getting car to area Ferrari dealer, and we’ll call it a day. Sadly, after being run around for a week or so by him, I was told to contact Go 2 Transportation, as they delivered the car. I’m still not sure if it is a subsidiary company of NTT Transport, or affiliated, or ?. Go 2 Manager then was offered same deal by me – settle quickly and I’ll take care of mounting etc… He said no way. In fact, he denied they changed paperwork, in spite of me providing copies of both, and said his driver must have just missed the damage on pickup. He then directed me to his insurance company. When I emailed him the photos of the 2 paperworks, he didn't really know what to say.

Their insurance company, like most, loves to drag things out as much as possible. I provided them an estimate for replacing the 2 wheels, and now to pay for the transport of the car to the nearest Ferrari dealer and labor to mount/balance/align. This added quite a bit of money to the claim. It was a very straight forward claim. 2 invoices – one for the 2 wheels and one for labor. What the insurer tries to do is keep low balling you and dragging things on and on to get you to take less money. I gave them receipts for everything and they tried to sneak in a long document for me to sign for a different price, at 30% less. I called him and said no way. It took another week, then they sent me another document, this time about 15% less than claim. It then took another 2 weeks and finally they settled. I had to threaten them with loss of use and loss of value claims to get them to resolve it. ** LESSON 4 is never let an insurance company short change you. They thrive on desperate folks who might need whatever portion of claim money they can get to get their only car and transportation fixed, so they try low balling. It’s sad, and made me feel bad for desperate folks. Of course, a typical Ferrari buyer is not going broke if 2 rims are damaged.

I think NTT Transport and Go 2 Transport handled this horribly. They lied about transferring my car to another truck on route. They apparently forged their paperwork, and weren’t even concerned enough to accept my overly generous offer to settle quickly at a less than fair price to me and call it a day. I have been advised to forward copies of their forged documents to the ICC. Overall it has been about 7 weeks since they were first contacted with a simple claim. I finally deposited the insurance check today. The 2 replacement wheels I ordered are still on their way from the aftermarket wheel company.

Wow, that is crazy. I am glad you got your issues worked out.
I had a Ferrari 360 delivered 7 months ago, I had no damage issues, but I was told it would take 7 days for my car to be delivered from New Jersey to Dallas in an enclosed trailer with a lift. My car arrived 15 days later on a soft sidede trailer, on the bottom level with no lift ramp, these guys had long metal ramps they had to adjust to get the car off the trailer. Somewhere along the way they got hydraulic fluid all over the right side of the car from the crappy trailer they were using.
Two weeks ago I purchased a new Range Rover from Naples Florida...same deal, told me 7 days and the shipping actually took 12 days, guy shows up with car at my door with hatchback opened while driving the 3 miles from where he offloaded the car. Carpet/Floorboards are muddy and grassy from this field he chose, he did not call to have me meet him at the lot he decided to use, not the lot 1 block from my house we agreed upon. Then he demands I sign the delivery papers asap because he was in a huge hurry and I also needed to take him back to the spot his truck was at....
He actually got angry at me when I began questioning him about why he chose a new spot and didnt bother to call me?

All in all I think the Autoshipper business needs some regulating, these people will tell you anything to get your business, then do whatever they want! I have heard some pretty scary stories from other members here.

I handle costly equipment for my projects.

Freight companies just do not care.
    It's a $317K 'lump" to them...

Take a look at the container ship breaking up off of New Zealand, dumping container after container into the ocean, to float away.

One of them could have been your 458 Italia! :D :D :D

Buy and drive man.....buy and drive.
Glad you got it sorted out.....

Crazy stuff. I learned quite a few lessons. Main one I believe is make sure seller/dealer who ships car keeps copy of pickup inspection report, and reviews it before signing it. Fortunately, seller of my car did so (without me even thinking to ask) - saved me big time.
New wheels are on order from DPE - very nice.

If you got right down to it you'd probably find these guys are just brokers. They may be affiliated with DAS(Dependable Auto Shippers) who are based in LA area? At any rate they sound like a bunch of yahoos. Good digging on your end but anyone would be nuts to use an outfit like that based on this experience. Better off sticking with the big guys like Reliable, Intercity etc. or maybe a smaller guy who specializes in high end cars and is the owner operator.

We hear about these stories alot on here and its sad.
I think these "no name" carriers are great for transporting a common used car but for an exotic high line car I dont understand why people use them.
There are proven companies out there that are exceptional like Intercity.
They might be a bit more but in the grand scheme of things how much more really when you just bought a car valued at over 250K.

Thanks for posting and making the forum aware of this transport company.
One good thing is that posting on this forum will show up on Google search if someone ever googles them for their services.

You are right on. I wish I had gone with my usual carrier (Exotic out of Orlando). Being it wsa Pebble Beach time and most trucks were heading west, not east, it was tough to find someone, and these guys were recommended by a few folks I knew.

You are right on. Hopefully the lessons I learned will prove valuable to others, even when using the bigger shippers, as I suspect they are not immune from occasional 'funny stuff'.

Never, ever heard a bad word about Intercity or Reliable.

Same thing with horse transport. Sallee Horse Vans is far and away the most expensive...and i wouldn't use anyone else. Some things, you get what you pay for.

I deliberately did not use the shippers the seller recommended and used Passport (FedEx Auto transport). Driver was a really nice guy and service was top notch. Sorry to hear about the shipping fiasco. :-(

    Two general points:

There is a world of difference between the better car haulers that have experience transporting high-end vehicles and the cut-rate guys. Cut-rate haulers move cut-rate cars. If you are going to drop the money for something as sweet as a new Italia, do yourself a favor and pay for the white glove service you really want and expect. And, frankly, the difference in cost is pretty marginal. Also, even if you didn't buy the car through your local F-M dealer, chances are they could have helped you out with the shipping. My local exotic dealer has their own state of the art enclosed haulers, driven by their own drivers, that are constantly moving vehicles across the country.

Next, and this is not pointed at any one poster or FC, but you need to temper everything you see posted in every Internet chat room with a HEALTHY degree of skepticism. Posters have a variety of motives, not all of them pure, and varying degrees of knowledge and experience. How many exotic cars, for instance, does an individual ship in his or her lifetime versus how many cars a large, high-end dealer ships every month?

I agree 100%. I've used Passport, but it was quite a while ago and a friend of mine used Intercity and we were both very satisfied. In a way its like insurance, you don't know how good a company is until you have a claim. Passport takes American Express credit cards.

Hello, I am an employee at NTT Transport. As I was searching Google to see our visibility to the public world, I came across this. I looked into this, as it was from 1.5 years ago. I did manage to find some information. I have attached an image, sent to us by OP and I wanted everyone to see it. The OP, after harrassing our dispatcher for many many hours in multiple days, the case was settled, and he was awarded a new wheel. He then went after insurance for suspension damage and depreciated value, from this scratch on the wheel. There are always two sides to a story, and I wanted to let you into ours.

I recently bought a Bentley with 12,000 miles on it ...Perfect...inside and out...
The guy who brought it wore blue jeans with BIG ZIPPERS on the pockets REAR POCKETS....
need I say more...the car is not perfect now. Cut and scraped the color off the drivers seat!
I am currently working with dealer(who arranged the shipping and included it in the selling peice) to make it right.......I will post when I get a settlement or screwed............
    Have used intercity.........great results!

I am convinced exotic transport companies as a whole are shady at best. I had the most horrible experience dealing with these jumbalones when I bought my 430 spider! I had to meet my car when a trooper called me, then 2 transports later my car arrived damaged, resulting getting the car to a body shop and repairing the wheels. This was really a hard lesson!!!

Looks like this might just be part of the "Ferrari buying experience". I was promised that mine was a direct delivery from San Francisco and would take no longer than 7 days. Now at 11 days the 'story' is that they have 2 more stops, and 3 more cars to rearrange, in addition to the 4 they already unloaded and will be here by 13 days. I'll believe it when I see it. Won't even get into all the other excuses being used as explanations.

In full disclosure of the story the broker did apologize and offer a $500.00 discount off the total delivery charge but I still haven't gotten an explanation how my direct delivery, which was promised both written and spoken, turned from going directly from CA to NC with my car being the first stop into a 7 car chinese fire drill . . .

I feel lucky in having my Porsche 944 shipped from So. Cal to Indiana. I did'nt order an enclosed trailer, but that's what was sent. My car was loaded up front, on top, which meant it was never to be off loaded until the end. It arrived in great condition, as sent. This was through a broker, who said they also had their own trucks, ??? Anyway, this was all done for $700.00. Hope everyone has the same experience.

Re: the OP, I would believe his side of the story rather then an employee "finding" this thread a year and a half later and minimizing what happened.

Agreed and lesson learned. Like I said though he told me in no uncertain terms that he was the "owner" of the trucking company, knew the 'one' driver (apparently there are 2 and not one now) and had direct contact with him throughout the whole trip which was another lie . . .

Oh well ,my fingers are crossed that the only drama I will have now with this delivery is going to be the grossly over-promised and under-delivered arrival date.
