UK NSX coupe with the 16"/17" wheels introduced in 1994 getting dangerously close to the waves. Luckily the salt shouldn't affect the all-aluminum NSX!

NSX-T ("T" for targa) was introduced for the 1995 model year. Much of the coupe's body rigidity was lost, despite 100 lbs worth of added stiffening measures. Still, the American market loves the open-top experience, and almost all USA NSX's following the T's introduction were targas. European model shown...

1997 saw the introduction of a larger 3.2-liter engine (up from 3.0-liters), achieved via a new material called Fiber Reinforced Metal that allowed an increase in bore without sacrificing engine longevity. A 6-speed manual, up from 5, was also added. More reading on that here: 1997 NSX/NSX-T Powertrain - Honda.com

A lesser-known 1997 improvement: Honda switched to thinner, stronger aluminum for almost every panel of the NSX, reducing weight while maintaining equal strength.

Pictured is a JDM Type-S version, more on that in subsequent posts...

The 1997 Japan-only NSX Type-S was in-between a standard NSX and the earlier Type-R in purpose. 99 lbs lighter than a regular NSX coupe, and including some particularly attractive BBS wheels. 10,357,000 yen when new (or about $85,000).

The inside of the Type-S, including standard Recaros, Momo steering wheel, titanium shift knob (yes, also part of the weight reduction effort), etc.

    The view forward in Type-S.

Honda also introduced for 1997 the Type-S Zero, which lived up to its name by doing away with A/C, audio, cruise control, power door locks, airbags, and power steering (by then standard on normal NSX). It had a lightweight lead-acid battery, single-mass flywheel, and thinner partition glass between the engine bay and driver's compartment (saving 2kg alone). It was 211 lbs lighter than a standard NSX coupe. Unlike Porsche, Honda does not charge more for less, so the MSRP was below the Type-S at $81,000. :)

209 early (pop-up headlight) NSX Type-S were produced, and only 30 Type-S Zero were produced.

An NSX-T of the same vintage ("NA2" 3.2-liter car) finished in Monaco Blue Pearl. Wheels were the same as those introduced in 1994, but now featured a brushed metal finish. The engine-cover mounted antenna on this car likely had to do with the early navigation systems fitted as an factory option to Japanese-market NSXs (not entirely sure on this one!).

The 2002 NSX update saw the pop-up headlights replaced by fixed units, among other stylistic changes. The Type-S model remained, but only 39 of these later Type-S cars were produced.

The below car is finished in New Imola Orange Pearl (YR-536P), introduced for the 2002 model. The earlier Type-S pictured above is actually Imora Orange (YR-514P), often incorrectly referred to as "Imola."

49 NSX-T's were produced in the very special YR-536P color for the USA.

At some point you could indeed publish a specialist book via my publisher Veloce Publishing (UK) http://www.veloce.co.uk/shop/index.php, I bet it would do well!

Sterling - Appreciate your response to earlier question about flipping NSX's.

Building interest on FChat forum for NSX is awesome, for it's an awesome choice in
trouble-free, low maintenance high performance sports car!

NSXPrime community would appreciate your research/photos and knowledge.

I'm doing this here because I think it's important the European car crowd gains an understanding of these cars and their significance. There are quite a few "old-school" enthusiasts who are unaware some of these special Japanese cars even exist.

Plus, a lot of the NSX Prime crowd already know this stuff, so I'm spreading the good word elsewhere. :)

I just read that and the engine DOES NOT come out for a timing belt & water pump job. It will run you ~$1.7-$2K depending on where you take it & what other little things need doing at the same time.

You are incorrect based on my experience with multiple NSXs, the experience of countless owners at large, and based on the service procedures outlined by Honda Motor Co. But for the sake of avoiding an argument, let's agree to disagree.

Saw one in a parking lot yesterday. Like my 308, the NSX is dwarfed by today's average car. Amazing how big cars have gotten over the years. Always wanted to love this car as I'm a fan of Japanese reliability but driving always left me feeling like I was driving an Accord. Lacking that special feel of an exotic. Very pretty and the lines have aged well. Probably the best built and, just like the old AD slogan proclaimed, "precision crafted " sports car ever.

As the former owner of of two NSX's, I can confirm the engine does not have to be removed for a timing belt/water pump replacement. Find yourself a decent tech, that would be Ben Schaetter at Daisy Import Repair in Washington,DC.

If it felt like an Accord, you must not have taken it to 8,000 RPM. :)

2003 Honda NSX pace car at Twin Ring Motegi. Honda built and owns the Motegi circuit and proving grounds, which also features the Honda Collection Hall museum.

Note that, while this car is actually a "Honda" NSX, it is badged as an Acura due to its use in the primarily American-watched Indy Racing League's Indy Japan 300 race, run from 2003-2011.
