It's been known for a while now that RM Sotheby's is auctioning one of the two Countach 25th Anniversary examples used in 'The Wolf of Wall Street'. Now, Bonhams is auctioning the other, just two weeks earlier.

    Bonhams / 25 Nov 2023 / Abu Dhabi / ZA9CA05A6KLA12692 (damaged 'Hero' car)
    https://cars.bonhams.com/auction/28793/preview-lot/5779829/1989-lamborghini-countach-25th-anniversary-coupe-chassis-no-za9ca05a6kla12692/

    RM Sotheby's / 8 Dec 2023 / New York / ZA9CA05A0KLA12722 (undamaged 'Backup' car)

As the RM car has been marketed for months now, Bonhams made sure to get some clarification (or digs, if you will) in their lot description:

Both are estimated at $1,500,000 - $2,000,000 USD by their respective auction house. It will be interesting to see how the bidding goes. One car got significantly more screen time, but the other is not damaged.

Ah interesting, I have wondered for years what happened to this car, I've asked on here a number of times but no one ever responded. So I assumed no one knew. I wondered if it was repaired or scrapped. Do those with more knowledge than me think the car would be worth repairing financially? I.E. would it be too expensive to repair versus its restored value?
Although I guess ironically that it's iconic Hollywood status may make it more valuable kept as is!?

Not sure I would spend circa 1.5m on a crashed Anni and then repair it. Just buy a normal Anni and use that. With all the spare change, you can repaint and make it a-la like this one.

The issue, as you state, is that the value for the crashed car is that it's crashed and used in a film. So whoever buys it would probably have to keep it in that condition.

  4. I thought the car was fixed. I guess being 2 cars, seeing the other one is the reason. The original Jordon Belfort trashed a Mercedes (IIRC a 560sl) not a Countach. I wonder how they come up with the estimates. Seems a little lofty.

I heard that too. Wasn't the car claiming to be repaired displayed at Amelia Island or somewhere similar?

I assume that the 1.5 is precisely because it is the movie car. Though I still wonder if it was a standard non famous car how much the repair would cost, and whether it would be financially viable to repair such a car versus its fixed/restored value.
A non famous badly damaged Anni couldn't be worth more than a few tens of thousands if that, could it? I assume repair costs would be several hundred thousand. Though I really have no idea, I am just speculating. It would be interesting to hear what somebody with knowledge of actual repair costs has to say.

Did they ask on this forum for a 25th that will be crash and willing to repair for anyone willing to supply their car?

  8. IIRC Joe mentioned that they were looking for a fair example as it would be destroyed. I don't remember looking for 2 cars though. Nothing about willing to repair though.

So, did it sell? I'm hearing conflicted answers. High bid 1,350m USD but thought it did not sell?

To be honest, 1.350 for that is a silly price IMHO. And I'm surprised they did not let it go. But what do I know?

Good thing it had the USA bumpers or it would have suffered front end damage

Save yourself the money. Buy a US spec Anniversary for about a million less and just wreck it yourself.

  18. Plus 15 % fees? 1,350,000 x 1.15 = $ 1,552,500.

That's not a good idea, first there is unnecessary a wrecked one in addition, second it was not used in a movie (which is the only point to say its more worth than a running car).

The movie fans must be a special group of people paying that much for a crashed car, but since there is still too much silly/cheap money around such things happen.

Lol, my first reaction to hearing that $1.35 million bid not meeting reserve was "Then it probably wasn't a real bid". I have a hard time imagining anyone would want to pay up for this, I mean, it's no Bullitt-Mustang

Think about it this way, if I were worth tens of millions of dollars or hundreds of millions of dollars or a billionaire, on which there are many, spending this kind of money to have a cool factor to display in your own large building of cars is for fun.......because you're a car guy. One or two million dollars doesn't make a dent in your wallet.

    Just something to think about

I'm sorry if I don't understand the obvious appeal to so many of a car to that has been used in a film that most view as a celebration of such a scoundrel as Jordan Belfort. Seems to me like the general public has difficulty discerning what is worthy of fame and admiration what should simply be infamous for what it represents. To each their own, I suppose..
