I have put about 300 miles on my 2006 F430 since I bought it last month and I think I have the shifting down pretty well. The question I have, and I don't know if it's me or this is a problem with the car, but when i shift from 1st to 2nd at relatively low RPM ( say 3000 ) I hear a slight 'clunking' noise from the tranny. At higher RPM's it works fine, it will also make this noise occasionally when I downshift from 3rd to 2nd and sometime I even hear it slightly when I let the computer shift from 2nd down to first. I'm sure its probably me and not the car, any idea's what I'm doing wrong. Thanks for your help...

I have never heard noise on any upshift or down shift in my 360. Well, except when rolling to a stop and I allow the car to downshift from 2nd to 1st. For sure never from 3rd to 2nd as you have said. I would have it investigated by the dealership. Could be diff fluid, could be gears.
The 360 manual also says to make upshifts at or above 5500 rpm, don't know why.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the car anyway!

My 360 does the same exact thing. When I bought the car a couple of years ago, coming from an SMG, I was shocked. I though for sure there was something wrong. Since, I've gone through a new clutch and updated the F1 ECU and I still get the clunking sound. In higher RPM's, never.
I'm surprised to hear that on a F430 though. I understand they shift much smoother than the 360's in all RPM's.

My new '07 F430 Spider F1 has the same clunking in and out of 1, 2, and sometimes 3rd at low RPMs. Sounds like the driveline has some slop in it.

My dealer says this is as designed, but he's not with me in the car when it's doing it so we may be talking about different noises.

It’s embarrassing around town as the thing sounds like someone’s beating a screwdriver inside an empty tin can when it shifts.

There’s no problem above 4k rpm or so. Only a problem at low rpms with lazy shifts.

Designed or not, it sucks. I’ll take it to the dealer for a checkup once I get a few more miles on it.

    I don’t recall my 360 F1 being this bad.

I have heard of that clunking sound from several F1s that I test drove, and in the same token there were cars that I drove that didn't have the clunking sound.

Update on this to be fair to the car: The Ferrari of Silicon Valley lead mechanic said that the F430 indeed has a noisy transmission and that some clunking will happen at low speeds in low gears. “Live with it”

He also said to use the “around town” setting (below sport) and that things would quiet down. I tried it for the first time and it cleared up 80% of my clunking around town up/downshifting in 1-3 gears. Unfortunately, it also keeps the exhaust baffles closed longer and the shifting gets lazier, but it doesn’t clunk as much.

Before that point, I always preferred sport or race for all my driving to get the fastest shifts and stiffest suspension. I’ll now switch between the settings when approaching/leaving town. Kind of screwy but it works. Still want my stick back, however!
