I am getting a California and I just hate the front number plate, which ruins the looks of the car.

If I was to drive around not having it on, what would the consequences be?

A fine? Penalty points? Are the cops really bothered about it?

    Thanks.

P.S. I have seen a few cars in the UK without them...

Don't the average speed cameras on motorways and congestion charge cameras rely on front plates? If so you might get clobbered!
A friend here in Bahrain bought a GT3 porker that used to belong to a Sheikh, the Sheikh never had to have front plates fitted, Phil only got away with it once, the he got a fine and escorted to the traffic division where the ceremoniously screwed plates to the front of his shiny new Porsche..
A friend with a 430 keeps his front plate in the car and just tells the copper it just fell off..

    Regards

    Nick

A £1000 maximum fine for the infringement - at the discretion of the attending officer.

You will fail an MOT if you present the car without a front number plate. If you modify the car by deliberately removing it after the MOT then the test certificate is no longer valid. This could invalidate your insurance in the event of a collision - at the discretion of your insurer.

Also, if you have a personalised number plate, it could be withdrawn by the DVLA.

The people you have seen running without front number plates are taking quite the risk by doing so. I really would leave the front number plate right where it is if I were you.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

    PS:
For more detailed information about the specific regulations, do a search for "The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001".

Usually a fixed penalty but no points

I suspect this is an urban myth since surely the offence is still committed ie failure to display

Thanks for all the info. So I guess the front plate stays :(

I wonder why aren't Ferraris designed with a place for the number plate??? Don't the designers think "hey what about the front number plate? We forgot about that!"

The Audi R8 and the Lambos have a nice space for the front plate...

I think what you mentioned only relates to alter, rearrange or misrepresent letters or numbers on a registration. At least that's what the DVLA website says. If I remember right the fine for no front (or back) plate is £60 and no points.
I will search for the info a little more and post when I find it.

PS I don't plan to have a front plate on my Cali as well ;-)

Those that do get caught it is mostly £30 fine no points but some get £60 and no points. The details about DVLA withdrawing the plate etc are for misreprentation of the plate. Small sized plate is also worse than no plate!!!

I have never had any trouble running my S1 Elise with no front plate (it just falls off after Mot and into the boot till next year).

Great that's what I thought. I just bought these 2 items that I am planning to use for more "difficult" cops especially in France and when I will have to do an MOT

You are getting your Cali much sooner than me - this or next month, right? So please keep us posted as to how you get along without a front number plate! If it works for you then I will follow suit :)

It should be towards the end of this month or early May latest (I hope)

I will definitely let you know how it goes but I will in any case drive it back from Italy with a front plate attached with one of the 2 things I mentioned. I heard bad stories in France and don't want to risk it.

I can't wait to be honest... I have to resist not to call the dealer and factory every day to see how it is going!

I wonder if it would be legal to mount the license plate at the top of the windscreen, behind the glass and just in front of the rear-view mirror. It would still be on display, just not on the front bumper.

    Hmmm...

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Are you picking it up from the factory? It will be a great experience! Will you do some laps around Fiorano? :)

But, is it a good idea to break in the engine while driving at constant speeds on motorways on the way back to the UK?

Would not risk driving through France without front plate as they may ensure that when you are taken to a garage to fit one it is screwed on!!!
On my CS I use the large penny sized velcro stickers to fit front & rear plates these are easy to remove once you are in UK.
The sticky comes off with Autoglym tar remover.

Yes I am supposed to pick it up from the factory. Some laps at Fiorano could be on the table due to some contacts (I hope).
The only "problem" I have now is that I have a very limited window that I can go there and I still don't know if the car will be ready by that date!

From what I was told it's not a problem at all to drive it back to the UK to "break it in". They are normally already broken in at the factory and I don't plan to do only motorway anyway.

I've run my westfield for years without a front plate on. Like others I put it of for the MOT and then it usually falls off a short time later. I just keep it behind the drivers seat in case I'm stopped,. but never have been.

Same deal with the Elise, the bracket broke when the plate caught a bollard mounting, never bothered putting it back on.

Woth the risk IMHO, but if you do get stopped I'd be putting it on again...

Just for info the california front plate mount is easy to remove leaving no marks/ holes. It is a 2 part affair clamping the lower part of the front splitter. It's held together with two screws that are hidden behind the plate once fitted. I ran mine without for sometime, does look better

Just saw this saw post. Look so much better without the plate :)

Nice to know that the mount can be removed without any holes.

BUT how many miles did you drive without the plate and did you ever get stopped or warned?

FWIW I've been running with a small sticker plate in front of a few of my cars for years without consequence.

On my 458 I didn't put the front on - a PC chatted me up on a parking lot, and said "just put a small one there - just so theres something", so put a small sticker on there as well.

Anyway - just my 2 pence. Haven't had issues with it the last 10 years. My LP640 even got through a MOT with a sticker-plate (full size though).

This guy aint running a front plate ;)

as far as i know it is just a on the spot fine but then if you keep getting caught they will find a way of giving you points,

i know when i used to use black plates on my car it was a £30 fine but after a while i could not drive more than a mile before i was stopped :(
